Deadman Walking
UFO Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The enemy is at the door
The enemy within.
Dressed up in the strangest clothes,
Smells of drinking Bombay gin.

There's a deadman walking
And his shadow's growing long.
There's a deadman walking
Taking it in
Before his time is gone.

My father was a Russian Jew
My Irish mother crazy.
I see summer, winter, fall.
When grown men
Cry like babies.

There's a deadman walking
And his shadow's growing long.
There's a deadman walking
Taking it in
Before his time is gone.

Solo

Wish I never had to leave.
Wish I'd never known.
Wish I could stay here forever.
Watch my garden grow.

There's a deadman walking
And his shadow's growing long.
There's a deadman walking
Taking it in
Before his time is gone.

There's a deadman talking
And his shadow's growing long.
There's a deadman talking
Taking it in
Before his time is gone.

There's a deadman walking

Deadman walking
Deadman talking

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of UFO's song "Deadman Walking" are quite introspective and contemplative. The song appears to be a reflection on the inevitability of death and the struggle with mortality. The first few lines introduce the idea of an enemy at the door or within, possibly referring to death waiting for the singer. The mention of the enemy dressed up in strange clothes and smelling of Bombay gin might indicate the idea of death being unpredictable and even intoxicating.

The chorus, "There’s a deadman walking and his shadow’s growing long," is a powerful statement about the approaching end, with the shadow metaphorically representing the impending arrival of death. The singer then talks about his parentage, referencing his father being a Russian Jew and his mother being Irish and crazy. This could indicate a struggle with his own identity and the sense of having different parts of himself.

The final verse speaks about a yearning for permanence, for a place where the garden can grow, and the deadman can stop walking. This could be interpreted as a desire for a peaceful afterlife or perhaps a sense of contentment in life, knowing that one has achieved their goals.

Overall, "Deadman Walking" is a contemplative song that reflects on the inevitability of death and the struggle with identity and purpose. It encourages the listener to take stock of their life and try to make the most of it before the inevitable happens.

Great album ,but my favorite has got to be "FORCE IT"

Nonrev Nosnibor Metal & Beer reviews

When schenker was going through his weird transition period but I don't think many people understand how great the three comeback albums were from the classic line up,, if only Michael and Phil could have got along for the sake of the band they would have captured the world again.

big tone

Anything mogg way schenker moore etc, do musically is going to be very good as a bare minimum. For me, the music these guys churn out is endlessly brilliant. I think their style of emotionally melodic hard rock is unsurpassed. Saw them in the early 80s, superb live as well.

Thank You Doc Roc...I've been wanting to share this track! Great album! (CD)

Diostillrocks

Sharks always sounded it could be an album from the Vinnie Moore era. More bluesy than other Schenker albums.

This is the first time Im hearing this since Walk on water which i think is way better than this. It doesn't sound like UFO

SinnerBoy

Walk on Water was produced by Ron Nevison, the genius that produced Lights Out, Obsession and Strangers in the Night. That may have something to do with your thoughts on the sound here. The mix for Phil's vocal doesn't sound quite as good on Sharks but Nevison is known for bringing out great vocals (he resurrected Heart back in the day).
