so if earth, fire, and water are the three elemental powers possessed by the characters in this video (as demonstrated by the long tracking shots at the beginning and end through the hill, the lighter, and the ocean), then there's only one missing element: Air.

but what does this missing element signify and why isn't it present in the video? if we learned anything from mainstream american after-school anime of the early 2000's, it's that the only element without an individual or tribe who can harness its power is Air. Until, of course, the last airbender reemerges from his 100 year slumber. clearly Umi draws parallels between her and Aang, the last airbender, by isolating her own image from the video and only being present through music; she motivates the narrative without actually participating in it, much like Aang in the last airbender before he is discovered by Sokka and Katara.

You might think that sounds far fetched, but there are actually a number of ways in which Umi compares herself to Aang, the last airbender, through her image. One glaringly obvious parallel is printed on her merch - she depicts herself in a very similar style to that of Aang in the last airbender; they practically have the same eyes.

This brings me to my next point: if Umi isn't in the video, then where could she be? well, I think the answer to that lies in her next song, Lullaby. if you look at the sneak preview video she posted on her instagram, you can see that she is depicted on a hill with a man. Umi and the man are looking out at the night sky, their backs facing the camera. The video is animated, and the stars and sky move, but Umi does not move. She's frozen in time - frozen, much in the same way that Aang is frozen in a ball of ice at the beginning of the last airbender.

Based on this, we can fairly easily predict what will happen in Umi's next music video. In Season 1, Episode 2 of the last airbender, Aang is introduced to the water tribe after being isolated for a century, thrown into a whole village of people that he doesn't know, but he still manages to make friends and have fun. However, he is eventually banished from the water tribe village and has to run away when the Fire Nation descends on the water tribe's party, ruining everything. I think that Umi will be placed into a situation where she is isolated/uncomfortable (her proverbial water tribe) but still has a lot of fun, but then will be forced to run away from this situation when an external force (her "fire nation") arrives to ruin everything.

A few months after a breakup, hearing this song was so triggering. I'd feel it all over again. I'll cry. I couldn't function. It’s unhealthy how much I fantasize of a better ending, to a story that now feels like a fantasy. Now all there is are memories, but when I look back on us it feels like a dream, and now all I can do is keep dreaming.

Things aren’t the same. I’m not the same, neither are you. And we never will be. I can’t tell if it’s for the better, or if there ever will be a happy ending. I question if there ever is.

This song makes me hopeful, in an unexplainable way, but it just does. Hopeful that maybe we will both find the people we were meant to be. I started dating my best friend of 7 years after refusing him for years in fear of it ending badly. I should have stuck to my gut feeling. He left for school out of town and progressively became distant until he ended things with me. I still cared for him and invited him to my graduation. He promised to come and never showed up. Months later he calls me crying spilling the truth about why he really left. ( For another female of course). Things were going badly with her and his family and he told me “ I called you because I know no matter what I do you’ll always be there for me” that whole phrase makes me sick to my stomach to this day. Sadly it’s true I love him just as much as I hate him. I listened and gave him the best advice I could. I never really told him about the way I really feel on the inside. But this song made me burst into tears and start writing a letter to him.

EDIT: I haven’t talked to his trash ass since and I don’t regret it at all. I’ve completely moved and found someone who LOVES me.🥺 Y’all this man pays my rent. Makes sure I eat. He sets time aside just for us and is always planning fun dates. His communication skills are through the roof. We don’t ever argue we always talk through it. Yesterday I was at the gym listening to this song, and I started to get this Deep dark rush running through my body. I got really sad... in between my sets I started to look at old pictures in my phone of her and I started to tear up... when I noticed myself tearing up I would jump onto my exercises to forget.... but after I finished It just came out. For me, I'm on the situation like you for 3 years and a half. I lose my first love. We were in relationship for 5 years and a half. A tons of memories. I understand every feeling about that bro. Even though it may feel like there's nothing or no one better, everything happens for a reason. Instead of focusing on the depressing side of the situation, get excited on what's to come. For every bad situation there's a good one bound to happen. Just breathe, and each day will get easier. I wish you the best! The best things I gain from the situation are my physique and mental, they are growing stronger every day little by little becase of my workout routine. I also gain tons of muscle and happy about it.
It is almost 4 years for my lonely life but it's ok. It is very hard at the beginning but the time will heal you at the end. I think you need more time.

What I love about this song the most is it’s not like a lot of other heart break song’s, the melody and the rhythm are so peaceful and happy yet the lyrics are heart breaking. It gives the vibe of being undeniably broken that a relationship had to end, but forever grateful and happy that it ever happened. There’s no bitterness or resentment in this song. It’s pure love. And I feel that what a lot of break ups tend to lack.. respect and gratitude that you got to spend the time with them that you did. Just out of expierence what I went through guys are comfortable and it boosts their ego that they can hurt you in all these way and you accept and and "forgive" them still. During the summer before my senior year of high school, I was visiting my cousins out in California. Beyond that, I had stopped taking care of myself; my hair was long and tangled, I never let myself process my emotions, and I only used therapy as a chance to scream into the void while a specialist nodded from behind a camera.
While I was in California, my family decided to take a camping trip to the Sequoias. I’d only been camping for a day, and even then I had to leave before we spent the night, so this was a new (and frankly terrifying) experience for me. We set up camp in the middle of nowhere with no signal, no easy way back home, and no discernible landmarks save for latrines and a community center. The park was beautiful, don’t get me wrong, but I knew I might hit rock bottom here.
I had been struggling with suicidal thoughts for years at this point, and without a quick and easy connection to friends who knew what I was going through, I saw so many possible ways to shuffle off the mortal coil.
One night, my cousin and her friends laid down in the tent they shared with my sister and I. We had just spent a whole night coming home late after a long day at the lake, and we were all tired and giddy. After a quick game of Cards Against Humanity, we all settled down and stared at the roof of our tent. The chirping crickets and the midnight sky, visible through the thin cloth of the tent, provided a calming atmosphere to an otherwise hectic evening. However, a bunch of people had started farting, so everyone was either giggling or grumpy(okay, I was the only grumpy one, but that’s not super important). So, in order to soften the mood, my cousin turned on “Remember Me.”
Thanks to a parade of video essays I had watched in the months before that day, I was in one of those “overanalyze every work of art you come across” phases. When I settled down to listen to the words, I think the refrain made me realize that if I died, people would be at my funeral. Family and friends would be there, honoring my legacy, whatever that really meant. In the eyes of the world I would become another statistic, but in the eyes of the people I cared about? Most of them would lose someone they cared about, for reasons I still can’t quite grasp if I’m being honest.
So, I redoubled my efforts to stave off my destructive thoughts. I remembered the people I cared about and the goals I wanted to achieve, the legacy I wanted to leave behind. The people I wanted to help, to provide for and pay back for all the good they’ve done for me. It wasn’t a perfect solution; I still struggle with these thoughts and downward spirals on a regular basis. But it’s kept me alive for this long, and I’ve gotten better at keeping my head above the water.
All of this is to say that there’s a chance I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for UMI. I’ve slowly been listening to more and more of your music, and as my life has grown and evolved in all kinds of ways—college, romantic relationships, book deals, new friends— “Remember Me” has kept me grounded and reminded me what I’m here for. So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you, UMI. Thank you for everything.

i remember listening to this song with my ex vividly, he was sitting across from me telling me " please dont ever let me dedicate this song to you " i looked at him like he was crazy, then feeling the pain in this song had i lost him like that. A year later here i am without him, lost, confused, and alone. I remember telling myself i would never feel empty listening to this yet here i am now. Im sorry for what i did to make you think i didnt care enough about us. i always did and still do, i love you with everything i have. i know youre with someone else bringing you happiness. I always had this song but never really listened to the lyrics.When I played it I got lost in the lyrics and had me thinking back to my first boyfriend that I thought I let go over. Time really speaks tone for someone that "gets over" someone quickly. Here I am reminiscing on what we had and realizing that what I had with him I might never get again. But honestly I'm grateful that I had him as mine before and we shared that young love . UMI doesn't lie when she says" I'm getting older nothing's the same" because when I look at him now it's totally different. A feeling that I can't explain.
