Domino Theory
UMPHREY’S McGEE Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's too late to argue with me
You think you figured out this machine
Well your way off, you're way off
If I rolled up my sleeves
You should stand back, just stand back
You'll take it if it's coming from me
You're falling down like a stack of dominoes
Your secrete was safe, but now everybody knows
Your demeanor was cleaner but now clean just ain't enough
This unexpected, misdirected you, you don't even know that you're stuck
So I can be just one of two things
What's good for you might not be for me
As superficial as it might seem
I got my mind made up, it's made up
Time won't work you tried
He's out of town and he ain't coming back
Your provisions made you go blind
What then are you looking at
It could be charity or not I don't know
Let me off of this suggestion before you implode
Based on the pretexts of your reflexes about my complaint
You need to more than reconsider so the bigger picture never goes blank
I don't care or not if you agree
It's way to late to argue with me
Details that you're trying to see
You're all talk you're all talk
I appreciate you trying
But you're way off you're way off
I feel like I've been shopping antiques
It's the same shit, it still stinks
You're falling down like a stack of dominoes
You're secrete was safe, but now everyone knows
Your demeanor was cleaner but now clean just ain't enough
This unexpected, misdirected you, you don't even know that you're stuck
On a sidewalk
That runs into a corner
Better turn around quick
Don't say I didn't warn you
Soon or late it was bound to happen
Faster than you'd think
You need to more than reconsider
So the bigger picture never goes blank
The lyrics of Umphrey's McGee's "Domino Theory" offer an intriguing critique of society and humanity's tendency to be enslaved by power, materialism, and illusions of control. The "domino theory" in the title speaks to the idea that small events or decisions can lead to a chain reaction of consequences, much like dominoes falling in succession. This concept is applied to the singer's relationship with someone who is convinced they know how to run the machine of life, but is ultimately ignorant of their own limitations and vulnerabilities. The singer warns them of the consequences of their naivety and arrogance, but they refuse to listen, leading to their eventual downfall.
The singer also explores the idea of perspective, noting that what might be good for one person may not be good for another. They resist being swayed by superficial appearances, asserting their agency and independence of mind. In the end, they urge the listener to be mindful of the bigger picture and consider the consequences of their actions.

as far as studio goes, i really prefer pre-safety in numbers UM, although mantis did grow on me. Don't get me wrong, these guys are by far my favorite 3rd gen jam band and they continue to crush every live set they play, they just started to get a little out there on their studio tracks

@PapaGeorgio89 I gotta disagree. I love their subtle change in their studio material. I love the diversity of it. Why do jam bands have to stay in the typical cookie cutter jam box? Maybe I'm just a little jaded, but I hate it when a band catches hell for recording a few tracks that are outside of their wheelhouse.

love the guitars

Umph tears it up live.....The studio stuff is good, but pales in comparison to the same stuff live. The band takes all songs they do to another level when performing them live. I have seen many bands and have been going to concerts for decades....yes I'm an old fart. These guys in the top 10 all time great live shows in my book. Don't hate me for not saying they are #1...I was lucky enough to see Jimi Hendrix yrs ago, just to give you a perspective of where I'm comming from with my praise.
