the road
UNKLE Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Knew a boy from a small orchard town
Wasn't much to do, not a culture around
But he had plenty of time to ponder, time to stake
Of when, and how, and where he was going to escape
This town still had that magnificent feel
His only problem was, it just didn't seem real
Good friends and fun times, were there to be had
But being in that valley, was driving him mad, so
When he came of age, he took his car and drove
Down that open road
Open road, hey, drive boy drive
Don't turn back now, there's so much in sight
So much for you, let yourself thrive
On that open road, hey drive boy drive
Drive boy drive
Grab the wheel, light up your smoke
Take a drink, and a quick toke
To you, directions need not be shown
The only law on the road is your own
Passing through La Grande, your truck breaks down
You try to find help, but there's no one around
So you go to the bar, looking to drink
You meet a cute blonde dancing, and she gives you a wink
Short little cowgirl, in that cute pink dress
The way she looked at you made you want to invest, so
They danced, and drank the night away
And later on she took him back to her place
They fucked a few, she passed out, he knew what he needs, so
He got dressed and grabbed her keys
Open road, hey, drive boy drive
Don't turn back now, there's so much in sight
So much for you, let yourself thrive
On that open road, hey drive boy drive
Drive boy drive
Drive boy drive
Open road, hey, drive boy drive
Don't turn back now, there's so much in sight
So much for you, let yourself thrive
On that open road, drive boy drive
Drive boy drive

Overall Meaning

The song "The Road" by UNKLE tells the story of a young man from a small town who feels trapped and seeks to escape its confines. He is restless and unhappy with the limited options and lack of culture in his town. The opening lines depict the singer as someone who spends his time pondering on how he can get out of the town. The chorus encourages him to pursue his dreams, to take control of his life, and to go out and explore the world. The repeated injunction to "Drive boy drive" emphasizes the importance of taking action and not being scared to move forward.

In the middle part of the song, the singer's car breaks down, and he tries to find help, but there is no one around. He goes to a bar, and there he meets a young woman who seduces him. They spend the night together, but he soon realizes that he does not want to stay in this town either. He takes her car and drives off into the unknown, ready to continue his journey on the open road.

The lyrics of "The Road" are a universal call for freedom, adventure, and the pursuit of one's dreams. They resonate with anyone who has ever felt trapped or suffocated by their surroundings and who has dared to take a risk and step out into the unknown. Mutedisease

This looks like it was shot with an IMAX or at the very least one VERY BIG camera. Either way it must not have been cheap. It's good to see alternative/indie acts who are willing to spare no expense to carry out their artistic vision to full fruition. Unkle have always been up there pushing the envelope with their vids.
