The Spell
URIAH HEEP - Demons And Wizards (1972) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I put a spell on you because you're mine
You better stop the things that you do
I ain't lyin', no, I ain't lyin'
I just can't stand it babe
The way you're always runnin' 'round
I just can't stand it, the way you always put me down
I put a spell on you because you're mine
I put a spell on you because you're mine
You better stop the things that you do
I ain't lyin', no, I ain't lyin'
I just can't stand it babe
The way you're always runnin' 'round
I just can't stand it, the way you always put me down
I put a spell on you because you're mine

I put a spell on you. I put a spell on you
I put a spell on you. I put a spell on you

Overall Meaning

"The Spell" by Uriah Heep explores themes of possessiveness, control, and manipulation in relationships. The lyrics convey a sense of desperation and frustration as the singer expresses their desire to exert power over their partner by casting a spell on them. The opening line, "I put a spell on you because you're mine," sets the tone for the rest of the song, highlighting a possessive and controlling mentality.

The repetition of the phrase "You better stop the things that you do, I ain't lyin', no, I ain't lyin'" suggests a warning or ultimatum being given to the partner. The singer is demanding that the partner change their behavior, implying that the consequences of not doing so will be severe. This reinforces the idea of control and manipulation, as the singer tries to dictate the actions of their partner through supernatural means.

The lyrics also touch on feelings of inadequacy and insecurity, as the singer laments being put down and not feeling valued by their partner. The lines "The way you're always runnin' 'round, I just can't stand it" and "the way you always put me down" reveal a sense of hurt and betrayal, leading to the singer's decision to cast a spell in order to reclaim power and assert dominance in the relationship.

The repeated refrain "I put a spell on you" serves as a constant reminder of the singer's intention to control and manipulate the partner. The cyclical nature of the song, with its repeated verses and choruses, mirrors the cycle of manipulation and possessiveness within the relationship. Overall, "The Spell" delves into the darker aspects of love and power dynamics, painting a haunting and intense portrait of a toxic relationship.

Всем привет! Кто вырос на такой музыке не станет слушать ничего кроме такой же... или лучше.
Даже если остальные знают только Июльское утро - это уже хорошо.

What's the use? You turned me loose
and left me here to cry.
Where's the love we talked about?
Where's my sunny sky?
Secret hearts and sorry tales
will never help love grow.
Spread your wings my darkened soul,
the time has come to go.
I will not be hurried down
or blackened by you lies.
I must go and find my dreams
and live in paradise.

I come back to these songs from time to time.
This is not music, it is a masterpiece.
Is anyone still listening to this today?

I’m 68, saw them February 18, 1972, was hooked and as I’m writing this, I’m listening to it. Demons and Wisards is my all time favorite, followed by Look at yourself, Magician’s Birthday, Gypsy, even have a David Byron solo LP, the perfect voice for this band
