All I Want Is You
U Two Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
You say you want
Your story to remain untold

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you'll give me
A highway with no one on it
Treasure just to look upon it
All the riches in the night

You say you'll give me
Eyes in a moon of blindness
A river in a time of dryness
A harbor in the tempest

But all the promises we make
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You say you want
Your love to work out right
To last with me through the night

You say you want
Diamonds on a ring of gold
Your story to remain untold
Your love not to grow cold

All the promises we break
From the cradle to the grave
When all I want is you

You all I want is
You all I want is

You all I want is
You

Overall Meaning

The song "All I Want Is You" by U2 opens with the singer questioning his partner's desires, suggesting that they want material possessions such as diamonds on a ring of gold and their story to remain untold. However, the singer only wants their love and commitment to each other. The promises they make throughout their lives are ultimately unimportant in the face of their relationship.

The second verse continues with the partner offering the singer wealth, stunning views, and safety during hard times. Despite these tempting promises, the singer still only desires their love. They want their relationship to work out and last through the night. The final verse reiterates the same idea, with the partner expressing their desire for material possessions and the singer insisting that their love is all they need.

The song's lyrics speak to the idea that love and commitment are the most important things in a relationship. The verses suggest that even the grandest promises and gestures cannot compare to true, lasting love. This theme is universal and timeless, and can connect with listeners of all backgrounds and ages.

1:40 When she looks at him and knows;
1:46, when the Strongman looks at his friend and immediately knows how lost his friend is in love and knows it will only bring pain to his friend;
I always was so grateful to the strong man for being his friend;
3:16 with the ring and that smile;
3:24 hopping in the Strongman's sidecar, meaning his buddy had his back on the trip;
3:47 That heartbreaking smile he shoots her;
4:01 Dashed;
4:50 ending the only way it could ever end.
6:00 Tossing the ring into the grave because his love died (or did he die);
6:03 The Strongman sees the ring and shares the pain with his friend and knows what a loss this is for his friend.

Amazing video. One of the all time greats.

I sang this song to my new wife at our wedding reception. Later that night on the way back to our hotel, as we were driving across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, this song came onto the radio. It was such a surreal moment!

No such thing as coincidence Damien.

Perfect Wedding Song. 💖

@DeuceBiggerHo

Yeah I think it’s a great choice for a song at a wedding. First dance or whatever. The other one I thought of was U2’s ‘love rescue me’. However I think playing it on a first date like the guy above said is putting the poor girl under too much pressure! 😯It’s a very emotional song.

Amazing your a top guy

It's my fantasy proposal. We are someplace special and he steps out and I hear this song outside. He is holding something that is playing this like in the John Hughes movie or has musicians playing the string instalment like the song while he sings to me

This song takes me to my late husband. I lost him to pancreatic cancer March 1st, 2006. He's visited me 3 times in my dreams since 2012 warning of the times we're in now in the world. I cry everytime I hear it now. I miss him.
