There are also 2 very important considerations when it comes to 8k and 4k.

The first one is that the average human eye isn't capable of perceiving the detail of 4k, let alone 8k.

The second is the usage of extra electricity for no improvement.

It should be noted, though, that OLEDs use a lot less power than LEDs and calibrated TVs use a fraction of power especially LEDs (I guess they turn down the brightness massively😁). This is not so much a consideration for cost but more a consideration of our collective electricity use and impact on the environment. 100 million 1080p TVs vs 100 million 8k TVs is a big difference in electrical demands. And going from 55 inch to 85 inch also bumps that up.

The good news is that LEDs were much more efficient than plasma and OLEDs are much more efficient than LEDs so we are headed in the right direction.

I think 8k is most important for large TVs due to the lower ppi with 4k. It quadruples the ppi which makes sense when a 98 inch tv is 3 times larger than a 55 inch. Essentially, the 98 inch gets the same ppl as a 55 inch.

As for gaming, 8k on TVs will never happen. It’s really, really hard to tell the difference between 1440p and 2160p with Upscaling. Most games offer DRS (dynamic resolution scaling) and out of 300 million gamers, not 1 has noticed a resolution drop ever between 2k and 4k.

As for streaming, we are still trying to get 1080p bluray level streaming at 30mbps in terms of video. In terms of audio, the sound resolution is beaten by a DVD DTS soundtrack by a significant margin 1.5 mbps vs 768 kbps for the best sound out there. It still sounds glorious and looks glorious but it’s not a blu-ray in terms of visuals or audio.

As for UHDs, I have a library of 3d blu-rays along with millions of other people which are no longer supported. Why would I pay $10 more per movie for another library when manufacturers discontinued support for my previous library? Was it that hard to support 3d for premium TVs? Streaming has nearly completely replaced physical media and UHDs are a small fraction of sales partly due to the lack of support from enthusiasts which is understandable. Who knows if HDR will always be supported or not replaced by a new format just like 3d was?

As for cable, it’s going in the opposite direction and from being close to 1080p 10 years ago, it's now closer to 480p judging by the size of each recording on the DVR. There’s a big difference between 480p and 8k like 81x more 😁 It's hard to believe that we have to watch soccer at a resolution that's 81 times lower than the TV's native resolution. Argh!!!

Can someone pin this please? Thank you!

Why don't we just Ditch the blue ray and physical disc...

On the panel, the person sitting left of Caleb said there was already equipment out and HAVE ALREADY been filming 8k.

He also said problem is remastering on a disc.

Okay, if step 1 to 8k implementation is physical first, streaming second, why don't we Ditch the useless DVD players and disc's and sell 8k movies on a flash drive/ thumb drive.

Then you plug that 8k movie that comes in a thumb drive into your TV port...

Why do we need an outdated system such ad a DVD player that costs $300... and holding us back from 8k because a disc can't store all the content???

Hello... we moved away from disc's to flash drives for file storage 10 years Ago! Why have we not moved on with movies lmfao

I think the bandwidth issues and also wall size issue will keep 8K limited to enthusiasts for quite some time.

The average consumer currently doesn’t even know how to get the most out of a 4K display.

Before we go any higher on resolution, they need to tackle motion resolution and motion picture response time. LCD has been too slow since it was introduced to replace CRT displays. If manufacturers had very good backlight strobing implementations, LCD might be able to overcome some of these issues since we have HDR. The other issue is raw bandwidth requirements. 8K is insanely data intensive, even when its compressed, and when its compressed it is still lossy. OLED looks great, it has very good MPRT, but its not bright enough to leverage it for higher motion resolution.

To put it another way: No LCD or OLED can give you a motion resolution higher than 600 lines without some form of interpolation. There is image data on your old Blu Rays that you will simply never see clearly when the picture is in motion. 4k and 8k in motion is subject to the same 600 line ceiling unless there is interpolation.

This is where manufacturers need to focus.

@flim flam Not sure, what you mean. What's a meme "the 2 important considerations" or the bullets themselves?

flim flam

it's a shame you started your post with such a meme of a line that it made your actual valid points after feel like they lost their credibility lol.

Worldwide there is one 8K cable programme in Japan. 4K blu-ray is a niche (to expense), 8K blu-ray will never come on the market.

Why don't manufacturers give us option to buy a TV "monitor" without speakers? This would be a great option for all of us who have sound systems and never use the TV speakers. How much cheaper would, for example, a Sony TV be if it didn't have all of those speaker and "screen audio" technologies that we have to purchase but never use?

haukionkannel

@Joe S
Only certain models... There are few TV-models that don´t have speakers.

Joe S

@Shane Lee Really? Any model? And it would be cheaper?

Shane Lee

You can get these without speakers. You need to call the store and request which model.
