Lundell made his debut in 1975 with the LP "Vargmåne" and was immediately hailed as "Sweden's Bob Dylan". In 1976 his first novel, the autobiographical "Jack" was published. Lundell was influenced by musicians such as Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and writers such as Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and other beat poets.
Lundell is one of the central figures in Swedish rock music and he is one of the most important influences on Swedish musicians writing and singing in Swedish.
His biggest hit up until today is "Öppna landskap" from 1982, a song once proposed to be Sweden's new national anthem.
Apart from the obvious link to Bruce Springsteen, Lundell has also let himself be influenced by artists like U2 and especially The Edge and his special guitar sound. The references to U2's "Achtung Baby" are very present in Lundell's releases in the years after "Achtung Baby".
Another link to U2 is the fact that U2-photographer Anton Corbijn is the man behind the camera on Lundell's albums "Man Utan Kvinnor" (1996) and "Club Zebra" (2002).
His latest release is the massive collectors box: Under Vulkanen 1972-2007. (14 CD's of unreleased material plus 2 DVD's containing b-sides, songs from compilations and other material. 104 of the songs included in the box are so-called "never heard before"-items.)
He also published his latest novel "Vädermannen" (The Weatherman) in the spring of 2008.

Det är vad dom säjer
Man har kört små testfarkoster här
Under högsta bergets topp
Med atomraketer kanske vi kan
Ta oss dit på ett par veckor
När vi förbrukat vår egen
Behöver vi en ny himlakropp
Sparka en sten
Den studsar bort mot kaktussnåren
Det är kyligt på den här höjden
Vilt brutalt och kargt
En taxi upp på kvällen
Till Menceyes andar och bin
Se stjärnorna gnistra
Djupt i mörkret
Nästan våldsamt
Nästan argt
Exil ut i rymden
Exil i det inre
Exil från det som känns
Outhärdligt ohållbart
Chauffören väntar tänder en
Cigarettglöd vid bilen
Han vill hem ner till dom sina
Han kör sen slingrande vägar
Nerför nerför
I alldeles för hög fart
Kärlekar uppdragen hornstötar
Trummornas virvlar
Urblåsta fönster stormarna
Och vågarnas skum
Låt det lugnas låt det åldras
Låt det äntligen stillas
Dämpa oron som slår ner väggarna
I själens rum
Exil ut i rymden
Exil i det inre
Exil från det alltför välkända
Som tränger sej på
Chaufförn långt däruppe
Styr galaxerna fjärran om fjärran
Neråt neråt
Till hotell och stränder
Jag ber honom stanna
Betalar och sen börjar jag gå
En B movie kust
Med alldeles för många barer
Jag tar en tidning från ett ställ
Och slår mej ner på ett hak
Bläddrar förstrött och fylls av hemlandstoner
Nån har avgått nån har tillsatts
Man skottar snö från tak
Rösterna i huvudet
Drar sina gamla plågsamma minnen
Men jag väntar på dej
Så jag ber dom hålla käften
Häller tonic på citronklyftan
Och isen i ginen
Lådor fulla av foton
Travar av fullklottrade häften
Exil ut i rymden
Exil i det inre
Exil från fåfängans fyrverkeri
Den siste chauffören väntar
Lugnt borta vid floden
Han tar hem oss alla till sist
Från den här exilen
Vi alla blivit utkastade i
In Ulf Lundell's song "Exil," the lyrics depict a sense of longing, displacement, and escape. The landscape described in the lyrics resembles that of Mars, a barren and inhospitable place. The singer mentions test vehicles and atom rockets, suggesting a desire to travel to Mars and start anew, away from a world consumed by its own destruction. The cold and brutal environment is contrasted with the beauty of the stars shining brightly in the dark sky, creating a sense of awe and desperation. The singer is in a state of exile, both physically and emotionally, seeking solace and a break from the unbearable reality.
The song captures the theme of longing for freedom and a fresh start, away from the familiar and suffocating surroundings. The lyrics reflect a sense of alienation and the desire to escape from the burdensome existence. The image of the taxi driver wanting to return home to his loved ones juxtaposed with the singer's unhealthy fascination with exiling himself further adds to the feeling of displacement and the yearning for a different life.
Overall, "Exil" is a contemplation on the need for escape, the longing for a new beginning, and the struggle to find a place of solace and belonging.
