Special One
Ultra Vivid Scene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

you told me on the telephone
to never fear to be alone
who would think it would come to this
the perfect crime
the perfect kiss

didn't trust what you said in your letter
in retrospect I should have known better
you shot the stars right out of the sky
from the sky

an empty bottle in your hand
I never hope to understand
did you have to turn away and run
did you have to be the special one

insanity comes and goes with the weather
I knew you well, you knew me even better
you shot the stars right out of the sky
from the sky

how do you think it feels
how do you think it feels
how do you think it feels
feels right now

didn't trust what you said in your letter
in retrospect I should have known better
you shot the stars right out of the sky

you told me on the telephone
to never fear to be alone
did you have to turn away and run
did you have to be the special one

how do you think it feels
how do you think it feels
how do you think it feels
feels right now

how do you think it feels
how do you think it feels
how do you think it feels
feels right now

feels right now

Overall Meaning

In Ultra Vivid Scene's song "Special One," the singer tells the story of a failed relationship. The song's opening lines suggest that the couple was once happy; here, the singer recounts the advice his partner gave him to "never fear to be alone." However, as the song progresses, the singer realizes that his partner was actually having doubts about their relationship. The lyrics "in retrospect I should have known better" suggest that the singer missed some warning signs that the relationship was in trouble.

Despite his partner's hesitations, the singer seems to have been surprised and hurt by the breakup. The line "you shot the stars right out of the sky" is a metaphor for the disappointment and disillusionment he feels. The chorus repeats the question "how do you think it feels?" as if the singer is asking his ex how she would feel if roles were reversed. He seems to believe that she was selfish in the way she ended the relationship, describing her as "the special one" who had to "turn away and run." The final repetition of "feels right now" suggests that the singer is still struggling with the end of this particular relationship, even though the song ends on a note of uncertainty.

Summer at a camp in Texas. Beautiful lakes and girls and good times. The soundtrack to that summer was basically playing Ultra Vivid Scene Joy (1967-1999) on repeat. Time of my life. Thanks, Kurt for the music and Camp Grady Spruce for the kisses and memories.
