True Confessions
Undertones Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't look so surprised
You've been telling me lies
True - true - true - confessions

Its hard to wake up to your makeup
So let's take off that disguise
True - true - true - confessions
Let's sit down and sort this out
Its not so hard to talk about
True - true - true - confessions

I got a picture from your sister

There was writing on the back
True - true - true - confessions

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Undertones's song True Confessions appear to be about a relationship where one person has been lying to the other. The lines "Don't look so surprised, you've been telling me lies" imply that the singer has discovered the other person's deceit and is confronting them about it. The repeated refrain of "True - true - true - confessions" emphasizes the importance of honesty in a relationship and suggests that the singer wants the other person to come clean.

The line "It's hard to wake up to your makeup, so let's take off that disguise" could be interpreted in a few ways. It could be a literal reference to waking up next to someone who wears a lot of makeup, or it could be a metaphorical reference to the other person's facade or false persona. Either way, the singer is encouraging the other person to drop their guard and be honest.

The song's overall message seems to be that honesty and communication are important in a relationship, and that keeping secrets and telling lies will ultimately lead to trouble. The upbeat tempo and catchy melody of the song contrast with the serious subject matter, giving it a bittersweet quality.

Apparently the Undertones themselves thought this was the best song on the EP when they recoded it. It wasn't really a B side. There were four songs on the EP. This was the first on the second side.

@jjdecani

Trust me: you're not.
