Alienated
Urban Dance Squad Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Time to flex real yo' 3 minutes I steal yo
Pay attention what I mentioned is cold like steel so
Life's like moby dick, get chewed, get spat out,
Weep with the handkerchief, built up 'n get to grips,
Humans so shady, man it amazes me
How I can't lose my cool and snipe like wesley
Especially when testing me, god I might stun 'em
Got somethin' in common, then I run from 'em
Alienated, alienated,
People got me wrong man, a millionated
So complicated, so frustrated,
Wish I got faded, alienated
Livin' like john q citizen, one of you,
Skin I'm in is the same, brother ain't pullin' you,
Mind peace how can it last,
Each fragment by fragment, stroll with soul
In control like the girl janet
Brotherman livin' slum,
Eyes demand give me some,
I crawl too for a fat cheque 'n income,
Disbelief hissin', now think that I'm dizzin'
Innercity, urban zombie, won't you please listen ?
But I got to keep my head up
Whack black on black crime,
Destroyin' the black mind,
Human beings never seeing,
The toll 'n deadly sign
A lotta love in chest - but I walk battledressed
Like pharcyde let it pass,
Bullshit 'n all the stress,
Composure's best form, when world's predatory
When shit gets down I got some troops ready for me
All this is insanity, too close to reality

Roll like ced-g, flex a spaceship mentality
But I got to keep my head up

Overall Meaning

In the opening lines of Alienated, Urban Dance Squad makes it clear that they are coming for listeners' attention with a cold, hard flow: "Time to flex real yo', 3 minutes I steal yo." The song reflects on the overwhelming complexities of life and society, and the alienation that can result from these complexities. Lead vocalist Rudeboy's bars critique human nature, calling people "shady" and highlighting the frustration of trying to communicate with others who just don't "get" it. He references famous films and figures throughout the track to underscore his points, comparing himself to Wesley Snipes and citing Moby Dick as a metaphor for life's challenges.

Line by Line Meaning

Time to flex real yo' 3 minutes I steal yo
It is now time for me to show off my true identity, which is unique and unparalleled. In just three minutes, I can steal the show from you and leave you feeling inferior.

Pay attention what I mentioned is cold like steel so
Please take note of what I am about to say, as it is powerful and unyielding, much like steel. There is no room for interpretation, this is the truth.

Life's like moby dick, get chewed, get spat out,
Life is like the novel 'Moby Dick', where one can be consumed and discarded by society without a second thought. It's important to remember that society can be unforgiving and can chew you up if you're not careful.

Weep with the handkerchief, built up 'n get to grips,
It's easy to feel overwhelmed and emotional, but it's important to let it out constructively and pull yourself together. Take a moment to cry if you need to, but then pull yourself together and find your inner strength to fight on.

Humans so shady, man it amazes me
People can be so unreliable and deceptive to each other, it's mind-boggling. I can't help but think how much they can hold against me or each other and still continue to connect with each other.

How I can't lose my cool and snipe like wesley
It's difficult to maintain composure when dealing with unnecessarily difficult people or situations, but reacting with violence or aggression isn't the answer. It's important to stay calm and collected, like Wesley Snipes.

Especially when testing me, god I might stun 'em
When people push me to my limit, sometimes I might use my power to surprise them and take them off guard. It's important to be confident and assertive when standing up for yourself.

Got somethin' in common, then I run from 'em
If someone is too similar to me and their energy clashes with mine or makes me feel uncomfortable, I tend to avoid them. It's easier for me to separate myself from people who are too alike, because I can't assert my individuality properly.

Alienated, alienated,
I often feel disconnected, left out or misunderstood, like an alien in a world that doesn't quite fit. Like I don't belong here, misplaced in the grand scheme of things.

People got me wrong man, a millionated
People consistently misinterpret me or underestimate the value of my opinions and my intellect. As an individual, I know I'm valuable and unique, just like over a million other people out there.

So complicated, so frustrated,
Life can feel extremely complex and difficult at times, and it's normal to feel fed up and frustrated with the constant struggle to succeed or make a name for yourself. It's easy to feel like the world's against you.

Wish I got faded, alienated
Sometimes I wish I could escape from reality and fade into a space where I can be free to think and feel like myself without the constraints of the world. A place where I can feel alienated but it's okay, because it's all just for me.

Livin' like john q citizen, one of you,
Every day I feel like I'm just another mediocre citizen, blending into the crowd and acting as 'one of you' with little to no individuality or uniqueness. It's easy to feel insignificant in a vast sea of people.

Skin I'm in is the same, brother ain't pullin' you,
We may have different experiences, but fundamentally we are all human beings with the same basic needs and wants. As a brother, I want to experience the same thing and extend that same kindness to others.

Mind peace how can it last,
It can be difficult to find inner peace with so much going on in the world, both in our personal lives and on a larger scale. Getting to that point where you can be at ease and keep away from trouble takes a lot of effort and preparation.

Each fragment by fragment, stroll with soul
Small steps and progress made daily can amount to something great. It's important to walk through life with purpose and let your soul guide you to your true self with each little step taken.

In control like the girl janet
Having a sense of control and personal autonomy is important in day to day life, very similar to the control that Janet has over her image and her artistry. It's a characteristic to strive for.

Brotherman livin' slum,
A lot of people, especially common people or folks living below the poverty line, struggle constantly to make ends meet and lead the best life they can on limited resources. I can empathize with their strife and struggle.

Eyes demand give me some,
My eyes reflect my experiences and the wear and tear of the world, I wish that people can see my life and my achievements and appreciate them for what they are.

I crawl too for a fat cheque 'n income,
Despite my artistic and personal ambitions, I still have monetary issues and have to work hard for a paycheck, like anyone else. It's tough to toe the line between personal fulfillment and financial stability sometimes.

Disbelief hissin', now think that I'm dizzin'
Sometimes I struggle to believe my own reality, it seems like everything is happening too fast and spinning around me in a blur. It can be hard to think clearly or stay grounded when this happens.

Innercity, urban zombie, won't you please listen ?
People living in the inner city can face a lot of issues and financial problems, and are often overlooked by society. It's a call for attention and the hope that someone might lend them an ear.

But I got to keep my head up
Despite everything that happens around me, I have to keep my head up and continue to work hard and strive towards excellence. Focusing on the future is more important than dwelling on the past, negativity or problems.

Whack black on black crime,
There is a vicious cycle of crime among black people, as members of the same community feel that harming their own kind is okay or acceptable. I won't stand for this and hope for a change.

Destroyin' the black mind,
An entire generation of black people are at risk of losing their motivation and incentive, leading to a loss of cohesion and group spirit. It's important to remove any barriers and empower them towards growth and progress.

Human beings never seeing,
It seems like people are consistently blind to the bigger picture, the truth and the underlying problems or conflicts. It's important to come together and work towards a common goal, rather than just individual or community growth.

The toll 'n deadly sign
All these problems and issues take their toll on society, with many casualties and many more threats looming around. It's important to recognize these signs as dangerous and work towards fixing them, rather than letting them fester.

A lotta love in chest - but I walk battledressed
There is so much love and compassion inside me, but at the same time I walk around with emotional armor, always putting my guard up and preparing for battle. It's a difficult line to toe and maintain, but it's necessary for self-protection.

Like pharcyde let it pass,
Taking inspiration from Pharcyde, it's important to let things slide off your back and not let them get to you too much. Life doesn't stop for anyone, and letting small things get in the way is only counterproductive.

Bullshit 'n all the stress,
There are many things around that can bring you down or stress you out, but it's important to see past them and focus on the bigger picture. To ignore these small negatives or just push through them for the sake of one's own well-being.

Composure's best form, when world's predatory
Maintaining one's composure is essentially the best form of self-defense when dealing with a harsh and unforgiving world. It's important to not react in unpredictable or negative ways, and instead react proactively and positively.

When shit gets down I got some troops ready for me
When things get really tough or I'm feeling overwhelmed, I have people and resources I can fall back on for support and encouragement. It's necessary to build a community around oneself and rely on them when necessary.

All this is insanity, too close to reality
Sometimes the real world can feel insane or too close to reality, with too much going on around us and too much pressure and noise. It's important to find ways to remove oneself from this and find personal fulfillment or purpose.

Roll like ced-g, flex a spaceship mentality
Drawing inspiration from CED-G, it's important to have an open and expansive imagination and way of thinking. Being able to think outside the box and come up with solutions that might seem impossible or unconventional.

But I got to keep my head up
Despite everything that happens around me, I have to keep my head up and continue to work hard and strive towards excellence. Focusing on the future is more important than dwelling on the past, negativity or problems.

What a great guitar work on this by Tres Manos. Awesome!!

HopelessStrlstfan

I saw these guys in Boston right when "Deeper Shade of Soul" hit in the US. UDS was such a talented bunch of hard hitting rockers. I never quite got their name. I never thought it did them justice. Maybe, it's a cultural thing that didn't quite translate across the Atlantic. I am all about music that makes you want to move, I play traditional African percussion after all. I just think UDS was more about hitting you in the face with bad ass roc'nroll/rap like the spiritual Father of Rage Against the Machine (great band, but politically immature, anyhow...) rather than a band about movin' your groovething. But that's just me. UDS were great and visionary. I wish they could still be around, but then again, maybe its best otherwise they could be like the ROlling Stones who maybe should have stopped right after Some Girls came out. Just sayin'

MultiMrMiles

lol rage against the machine totally stole/ copied their style and form, UDS was out there way before them, they saw them live and copied it all, look in the old interviews its all there

Evan Urena

So much originality and creativity in this band that it's just mind boggling. Alienated indeed. It's like what Tilon, the lead vocalist, said an older interview: "i'm an authentic rapper". This song also gives a different flavor of rap rock that i've never heard before amoung many other songs of theirs. This is also coming from someone who recently discovered more of this classic band after getting into Rage Against The Machine while finding out that this band was their major influence.
