Choices
Uriah Heep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was walking all alone
Through a sideshow
With passion and pain
On each side
Something inside me was calling
For a chance to stay alive

At the time I didn't know
What was calling
As my head was buried in grief
Today I heard what was crying
My freedom calling me

And we all make our choices
Like a blind man feels his way
And the choice
I've made is simple
Passion over pain

When I got to
The end of the sideshow
And looked back
To where I had been
My eyes filled with
Teardrops of loneliness
For the ones
Who will never be fee

I thought of
The children in the sideshow
As they wandered
Around so confused
Some day
They'll make their decision
But which one will they choose

And we'll all make our choices
Like a blind man feels his way
And the choice
I've made is simple
Passion over pain

And we'll all make our choices
Like a blind man feels his way
And the choice
I've made is simple
Passion, passion over pain

And we'll all make our choices
Like a blind man feels his way
And the choice

I've made is a simple one
Passion over pain

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Uriah Heep's song "Choices" is about making difficult decisions and weighing the consequences of those decisions. The song starts with the singer walking through a sideshow, where he feels the passion and pain on each side. Something inside him is calling for a chance to stay alive, but he doesn't know what it is at the time. He is in grief and struggling to come to terms with the choices he has to make. However, he realizes that the calling he hears is his freedom calling him.

The chorus emphasizes the idea that everyone makes their choices, much like a blind man feeling his way. But the choice the singer has made is simple - he chooses passion over pain. He has decided to follow his heart and do what makes him happy as opposed to taking the easy route and avoiding pain. He is confident in his choice, and the simple decision has brought him peace.

Towards the end of the song, the singer looks back at the sideshow and feels sadness for the children who are wandering around confused. He realizes that they, too, will have to make their decision one day, but it won't be a simple one. They will have to weigh their options and make a choice that may not be easy.

Overall, the song is encouraging listeners to embrace their choices, and to be brave enough to choose passion over pain. It's about the importance of following your heart, even though it may be difficult.

Glad you made it through, hope the momentum keeps up. I had a similar experience several years ago, when I heard this for the first time I was weeping uncontrollably by the end of the first chorus because I suddenly felt a need to survive instead of giving up. One of the most cathartic moments in my entire life, and I decided to stop letting others rule my choices.
