Look at Yourself
Uriah Heep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see you running
Don't know what
You're running from
Nobody's coming
What'd you do that was so wrong

Look back and turn back
Look at yourself
Don't be afraid, just
Look at yourself

If you need assistance
Or if all you need is love
There's no point in hiding
Tell me what you?re frightened of

You've got a friend, just
Look at yourself

Don't be afraid, just
Look at yourself

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this Uriah Heep song, Look at Yourself, is all about self-reflection and self-examination. The first line, "I see you running, don't know what you're running from," is an observation of someone who is in a hurry or has a sense of urgency. The following line, "Nobody's coming, what'd you do that was so wrong," implies that the person is running away from a problem or a mistake that they made. The singer of the song encourages the person to stop and look back at themselves to face their problems head-on.

The chorus of "Look back and turn back, look at yourself, don't be afraid, just look at yourself" emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, acknowledging past mistakes, and facing the reality of who you are. The next verse encourages the person to seek help when needed instead of hiding from their fears. "If you need assistance or if all you need is love, there's no point in hiding, tell me what you're frightened of. You've got a friend, just look at yourself, don't be afraid, just look at yourself," signifies the importance of having someone to rely on, be it a friend or family.

Overall, the song's message is one of self-reflection, facing fears, and seeking help when needed. It's a message that remains relevant in today's world where society tends to push people to hide from their problems or to keep running away from them.

@@CarpeDiem23 I always found that Deep Purple and Uriah Heep nicely defied being pigeonholed; I think of them both as "hard rock" more than anything else, despite Deep Purple being considered part of the "holy triumvirate" that were the founders of "heavy metal music." Personally, I could listen to them all day long, and still have a hard time trying to categorise them.

I mean, sure, you've got "Speed King," and "Stormbringer," which are definitely some kick-@$$ heavy metal, but then you also have "When A Blind Man Cries," "Maybe I'm A Leo," and "Woman From Tokyo," which are anything but metal. Know what I mean?

Or maybe I just like complicating things and/or overthinking them, but either way, DP and UH will remain part of the soundtrack of my life because they just have that incredible sound!

Wanna know who else has an incredible sound? Canada's Guess Who and April Wine, to name just a couple. To hear the Guess Who at their very best, check out their "Canned Wheat" album. As for April Wine, virtually anything by them is amaze-ballz, but I'm especially knocked out by "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen" from their "Nature Of The Beast" album.

Someone else with an epic sound is Frank Marino, who was literally the spiritual godfather to entire generations of Canadian shredders.

Enjoy!😉

We did a "what the hell" trip to Chicago. Didn't even care who was playing. We get there and it's Uriah Heep opening for Deep Purple at the cow palace. We were left for dead after Heep played - they sped through their set with the utmost perfection. When they played Rainbow Demon I thought I saw Satan sitting in the 3rd row. Had to be the shrooms.

Deep Purple came out and just blew us out of seats. 2 lids, a few schrooms and little Mateus to stay liquid. The other 3 Lug Nutts were too high to drive so I did. The ringing in my eyes lasted 4 days.

The 70's. What a fuckin ride.

To all you Namer's. We still ache for you guys!

I see you running.
Don't know what you're running from.
Nobody's coming.
What'd you do that was so wrong?

Look back and turn back.
Look at yourself.
Don't be afraid just,
Look at yourself.

If you need assistance,
Or if all you need is love,
There's no point in hiding.
Tell me what your frightened of.

You've got a friend just,
Look at yourself.
Don't be afraid just,
Look at yourself.

A song that really helped me get through some troubling times when I was younger. If you had a rough childhood and sometimes lack confidence, just listen to this song once every day before you start it. “You’ve got a friend, just look at yourself. Don’t be afraid, just look at yourself”
