In 1990 Usher joined an R&B local quintet called the NuBeginnings, which was organized by local music svengali, Darryl Wheeler and then he decided to pursue a career in music. Aside from recording, Usher has ventured into business. He has established his own record label, US Records, and is a part owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers franchise. He has also dabbled in acting, with a recurring role on the teen sitcom Moesha, and roles in the films The Faculty (1998, with Josh Harnett) She's All That (1999, with Freddie Prinze, Jr.) and Texas Rangers (2001, with Ashton Kutcher).

There's too many of you crying
Brother, brother, brother
There's far too many of you dying
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today - Ya
Father, father
You see, war is not the answer
For only love can conquer hate
You know we've got to find a way
To bring some lovin' here today
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me, so you can see
Oh, what's going on
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Ah, what's going on
In the mean time
Right on, baby
Right on
Right on
Father, father, everybody thinks we're wrong
Oh, but who are they to judge us
Simply because our hair is long
Oh, you know we've got to find a way
To bring some understanding here today
Oh
Picket lines and picket signs
Don't punish me with brutality
Talk to me
So you can see
What's going on
Ya, what's going on
Tell me what's going on
I'll tell you what's going on - Uh
The lyrics to "What's Going On" by Usher featuring Timbaland are a tribute to Marvin Gaye's iconic song of the same name released in 1971. The song's opening lines "Mother, mother, there's too many of you crying, brother, brother, brother, there's far too many of you dying" is a commentary on the social and political struggles that were prevalent at the time of Gaye's original song release, and continue to be relevant today. The lyrics urge people to come together and find a way to bring about love, peace, and understanding.
The song's chorus repeats the questions "What's going on?" several times, emphasizing the need for people to pay attention and understand the world around them. The bridge of the song talks about the importance of communication to address the issues at hand. Picket lines and picket signs are tools of protest, but the song stresses the need for peaceful conversation to bring about change.
The final verse of the song speaks to the frustration of being misunderstood and judged by others. The lyrics urge people to find understanding and tolerance amongst each other, as this is the only way to bring about real change.
Overall, "What's Going On" is a powerful call for unity, understanding, and peace. The song touches on themes that are still relevant today and encourages us all to work towards positive change in society.
