Utopia
Utopia (feat. Charlie) Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The rhetoric amongst right wing and conservative evangelists is that queer and trans people are dangerous. They use lies and bigotry to spread hate which has sparked and incited violence against our people. Perpetrators of hate crimes are locked in cells where the cycles of violence and oppression are masked as rehabilitation. We work tirelessly to keep each other safe and for that we can be proud but we need political reform and equitable access to resources to attain real freedom. Even when we are knocked down, we rise and they cannot destroy our hopes for utopia.
cccountability
Brought possibility
We found commonality
Paid us equal wages
Learned to engage us
Took the torch
Burned it all down
Look what we found
Took the torch
Turned it around
Reigned in the sound
Of you, of me
Letting us be
Equally free
Riiiiising
They, he, she
Children run free
Equally seen
No bullies
It feels serene
Magical glee
Pristine equity
Utopia
Utopia
Utopia
Doesn't really matter if it's just YOU and ME
We can build a world where we don't need to bleed
Doesn't really matter if it's just YOU and ME
We can build a world where love is guaranteed
Utopia
The opening lyrics of the song "Utopia" by Utopia (New Ears Mix) paint a picture of confusion and detachment. The singer describes a day that feels "strange" without any colors or shapes, and without any sounds in their head. They are so disconnected that they forget who they are, but it seems that being with someone else contributes to this feeling. The following lines suggest that the singer is not supposed to feel anything at all; there's no reason or sense to their existence. This feeling of detachment is prevalent throughout the song and serves as a warning for the dangers of losing touch with reality in the pursuit of an ideal.
The lyrics then shift to a darkly humorous reference to training a dog to see and live like the singer. This "fascist baby" seems to be the manifestation of the singer's desire to control their environment and impose their specific worldview on it. The idea of creating utopia is a powerful one, but it becomes problematic when it involves a desire for total control. The line "I'm wired to the world / That's how I know everything / I'm super brain! / That's how they made me" suggests that the singer has been engineered to be the perfect "citizen" by society. However, this perfection comes at a cost, as the singer has lost touch with their own identity and is unable to experience emotions in a healthy way.
Overall, the song "Utopia" serves as a warning against the danger of becoming too obsessed with a perfect ideal at the cost of losing touch with oneself. The lyrics suggest that this detachment can lead to a desire for total control and the loss of one's ability to feel emotions in a healthy way.

I worked for EMS of America. I built the Synth for this album out of components of the EMS AKS Synthesizers. There were 4 Putney's and some other components. I was a student at Hampshire College of Amherst MA at the time - best college gig ever. I went on from this to more conventional parts of the electronics and computer industry. Not long after I worked for Computer Signal Processors Inc. (CSPI). we built advanced computers (replaced today by a computer sound chip). Our biggest customer was the NSA.

Consider this: Todd was 26 when he made this album. What producer, musician, whatever - of any age- is composing music like this today? Nobody, only jazz guys are at this level. Justin Bieber? Ed Sheeren? The Weeknd? This is amazing stuff for a 26-yr old to compose and play

Tons, you just won't hear it on stupid commercial mass media. Your examples are of mindless contrived product for drolls. Do you think humanity just stopped being creative and inspired? You just haven't tried to keep up or search out anything new. I'm so tired of comments from dusty shut-ins complaining about "music today".

@Jesse Sell you ignoramus, learn to read. I said jazz guys are doing it, which if you understood music theory and composition, you’d know why I compared Todd to them. Who is an example today? Jacob Collier is one. Do you know him? Probably not. But really, the criteria I cited are being in your 20s, composing on this level and also being popular. With that in mind who are your examples?

Also, this is basically a watered down version of Herbie Hancock or Zappa.
