I feel terrible for when I was roughly aged 9 and knew a person on a caravan site, who I shall call Daisy. Before being Daisy, she was Richard. I met them as Richard and they were a teenager who I played with despite age differences. Richard became Daisy during the time I had not been to the caravan, and I met Daisy in the 6 weeks holidays.

I had no idea what being transgender was like. In fact, I didn't know that it was a thing because I was denied that knowledge—never provided that knowledge. I thought it was a joke that they were calling themselves Daisy and, though my memory is foggy, I remember mocking Daisy for trying to trick me or whatever dumb excuse. I did this in front of people who, at the time, I called my friends. I looked at them for backup and clearly, they knew more than me. The older ones even sided with Daisy (which was good).

I've never said sorry to Daisy because I could never speak to Daisy again. I was a dumb child and I thought I was right. I wish I had said sorry, and should I meet her now—I will do more than say sorry; I will beg for forgiveness.

I remember telling my parents what happened because I wanted to know that I was in the right. It was awkward on the ride home (from the caravan site) when I brought it up. While I was told I was wrong, I wasn't told I was wrong. I wasn't told why I was wrong and I wasn't told about what being transgender is. It was never explained.

Watching this video doesn't make me feel better but it opens up my eyes. I can see the problem and I can see how I arrived at the conclusion that Daisy was having me on. I was ignorant.

I really enjoy these videos. They make you think. And they have reminded me of the above little story. I love this channel already and I am off to watch more. Sorry to anyone upset by what I've said, it wasn't the intended effect.

I came out as bi to my parents almost 10 years ago (I think) and I still doubt that I’m bi/pan because I’ve never been involved with anyone of any gender. I think that I’m more attracted to men than women, but how can I know? Maybe I only think that way because of heterosexual normalization and a desire to be “normal”.

Section 28 went beyond the harms you mentioned. It didn't just leave people who really would have benefited from knowing ignorant. Section 28 promoted homophobic bullying in schools. I qualified as a teacher a couple of years after it was repealed. When I got a job, I openly challenged pupils homophobic language and bullying based on sexuality and gender, but teachers warned me that I could get in trouble. I had to point out that the law never prevented tackling bullying only promotion, two very different things, and that the law no longer existed. While most of the staff were obviously distressed by the law, they were still terrified of becoming a victim of it, and it didn't even exist at that point, so I can only imagine it had been much worse when it did.

Personal experience here: I live in Italy, where neuronormativity is INCREDIBLY strong. There's loads of metaphysical and epistemological scepticism towards mental health issues, which are still largely taboo; psychologists are seen as some sort of witch doctors, and, until recently, available information was scarce. It wasn't until about 4-5 years ago that I realised I have been suffering from anxiety and occasional depression since I was at least 14. It wasn't until less than a year ago that I had the economic resources to actually go to therapy, and deep-seated issues keep coming up at each and every appointment. I also have a history of feeling inadequate and rejected due to being forgetful, frequently zoning out during conversations, lectures, etc., often speaking out of turn, having a hellish time with deadlines and being very easily distracted. So one day, I read up by chance on inattentive ADHD, and the realisation hit me like a truck. My abysmal university records, my inability of keeping a job that requires deadlines, my extreme forgetfulness... suddenly, everything made sense. Before that, I often thought of ADHD as "being annoying and hyperactive", a perspective given by media and ableist discourse all around me. So many years of my life wasted in misery and self-hatred, and I will never get them back. Had there been more ADHD awareness when I was a child or even a teenager, my life would probably have been a lot more different. I might have learned some life hacks from people with the condition instead of being constantly told I was just lazy, or I might have got professional help. But really, at the end it was liberating, because now I can find out what I need to do in order to make my life less of a living hell and, most of all, I'm not lazy or stupid.

Similar to the woman's description of learning she had postpartum depression, I had the same reaction to being diagnosed avoidant personality disorder.

Many people hear that and their response is to treat me like a victim who needs advice, who needs help out of a situation. People tell me I have to "get over it" when in reality, I get over it every day to do the things I have to do, and to even remain alive.

The reality is that the diagnosis is entirely liberating. Far from making me feel victimized, it makes me feel proud of myself for having made it this far at all. It's no longer a personal deficiency, but a combination of physiological things, and in my case, circumstance.

I blame myself for everything all the time, but at least now I don't blame myself for blaming myself.

Oof that talk about transness really hit the mark on my experiences. It was only until I realized I was bi and started questioning other basic assumptions about myself and my feelings that I realized I was trans. Before then I never even imagined the thought of even being gender non-conforming. And the thought of wanting become a femboy after realizing I was bi was the first huge egg moment I had. Just a few months later, I finally realize I'm trans. For those unaware, an egg moment is a moment where, in retrospect, it was a huge clue that you are trans.

Still not sure I am though. To get back on the topic of the video - I sometimes wonder what would have happened had I been fully ignorant of trans people that day of May 2022. In regards to hermeneutical injustice, I definitely feel it in terms of my queerness (along with a lot of people in the comments), but where it resonates with me in a major way is in regards to my ADHD. Throughout the entirety of my schooling, I always did well, but I often struggled to get things in on time, fidgeted by drawing in the margins of my books, and seemingly "procrastinated" because I often couldn't seem to make myself focus on things. Every parent-teacher interview of my life was "she's a great student, love having her in class, asks interesting questions, but needs to work on getting assignments submitted on time". The first time I heard the term ADHD and heard it described (by Markiplier, of all places lol) when I was 17 and in my second last year of school, it was a revelation. Oh my god, is there a reason I'm like this? The more I looked into it, the more quizzes and checklists from every source I could find that I did, the more things clicked. When I went to my doctor to ask about it, I was so nervous. To his credit, he took me seriously, but he didn't really know what to do, and after talking to a colleague, the eventual conclusion was "you're a teenager, it's just hormones. If you're struggling talk to the school counselor", never mind the fact that I'm not sure if we even technically had a school counselor. Certainly not ones who had any idea what to do about this. I am now 21, and I started ADHD medication about a month ago, and I have never felt better mentally. Every day, I wonder what I could've done if I had been diagnosed when I first suspected I had ADHD. I wonder, if I had been a boy would I have been diagnosed earlier? If I was more "disruptive", or had had "lower quality" work, would I have been taken seriously? How many breakdowns could've been avoided if I just knew what was happening in my brain and how to handle it? The lack of mental health knowledge and support, especially when it comes to things other than depression, anxiety, and boys with autism, in rural areas is absolutely abysmal. It's especially heinous among doctors and teachers, not because they're any more ignorant than other adults, but because they are the ones who need to know about this stuff the most. Doctors because they're medicals professionals, and teachers because of how mental health issues often first manifest or are most noticeable in schools and during adolescence. I told my teachers I thought I had ADHD and I was trying to manage it, and they tried to help however they could, but the vast majority just didn't know how to handle it. I, and every single student before and after me with mental illnesses, deserve to know about our own brains and have that support.

I got diagnosed at 28. Meds have helped me tremendously, I even no longer have passive suicidal thoughts, which were stemming from how incredibly hard everything was for me to do, although I was doing the bare minimum expected of adults. Anyway, since being diagnosed it strikes me as truly mad that we write school reports for children, which are often used as evidence to later support a diagnosis of ADHD in an adult, yet we don't have a simply system in place that uses those reports to flag kids who may have ADHD (or other mental conditions). It would be so simple and could save lives, because that's what is at stake, lives! It's that serious.

The "realisation of ignorance" prat really hit home for me. Until two years ago I didn't even know that women can have ADHD, and when I learned that, and learned what ADHD really is like, then it all came to me in one massive swoop. Now I know, who I am and why I am the way I am. And I finally know that I'm not broken, worse than others or "not right". I am different. It was liberating, and while I still mourn the time and life lost in not knowing, getting to know was the best thing that happened to me my whole life. Better even than getting accepted into a music university in UK, when I was still living in Poland. And while I'm not officially diagnosed or medicated yet (neurodiversity diagnostic in UK sucks almost as bad as trans diagnostic) I am still better off knowing than living in ignorance.

It gives me hope that something hateful like section 28, that was passed into law in my own lifetime, has so quickly (in relative terms) become something unthinkable in today's society. I wasn't given what I needed in order to understand my own bisexuality, or to be a trans ally, but I'm getting there anyway. By removing S28, my kid's generation are getting a huge head-start, which should lead to more tolerance and understanding in future society.
The flip side is that, because it has happened so fast, many of the people who supported it at the time are still in power now. Maybe they pretend they weren't partly responsible for it, maybe they are still unashamed. I don't know which is worse.

For long time I only had a vague idea of transgender, and I only ever saw or heard about it in regards to trans women. Then I stumbled on a Jammiedoger video back in 2015 and all of the pieces smashed into place. I had never even considered the possibility of trans men existing, and yet I knew that was who I was. And that realization was so traumatizing that it took nearly another 5 years for me to come out.

Totally the same. When I saw Samantha Lux for the first time and heard how she described being trans I was like "Wait wtf?! That checks out!". I got really panicked, because I knew that is me and that's what I want, but that I didn't want to go through that. I didn't want to think about it. So I tried to put aside, which didn't work.
Two and a half years later and I am still getting myself together one by one and allowing myself to be more, who I want to be.

I’m from Texas, United States. My sex education was basically: “you will go through changes. You’ll get growing pains, mood swings, and changes in some of your organs. There are also things called stds and they are very bad.” That’s it. No mention of LGBT people whatsoever, what consent is, or what are contraceptives. I also had to learn and unlearn everything about sexuality, gender identity, safe sex, and contraceptives.

When I was 14 I was obsessed by another boy in my year but while I had learned that men could be sexually attracted to one another (mainly through homophobic jokes) I had no concept that they could be romantically attracted to one another. That fact was entirely absent from the social, cultural or educational information I had access to. All I knew was that I thought about him endlessly and obsessively. He was fascinating. I explained it to myself by reasoning that he was destined to be a great figure from world history like Napoleon or Mozart because that was the only context in which I heard men describe other men as “fascinating”. It took me a few years to figure out I was in a state of unrequited love and that this was a normal experience for most LGBT youth. I wish someone had told me.

I had a similar experience. It took me 25 years to figure out that the fact that I only crushed on women meant I was a lesbian. I thought that since I didn't necessarily want to fuck them, I was "basically straight" even though I had absolutely no interest in any man, ever.

Mostly with bisexual women but sometimes with bisexual men (how am I managing to only make friends with bisexual people? I only just realized I do that). I can relate to the end where you talked about meeting a trans person for the first time, our sex ed at school was basically nothing, I didn't know anything about the LGBT community until I moved to a city with more people and met some, I was hanging out with a friend and she asked if I liked anyone, and I thought about it and said I don't like anyone or find anyone attractive in the way other people describe attraction, she asked if I was Asexual, obviously I asked what the hell is that. after a very long conversation where she described it and it perfectly matched how I was experiencing life and realised I was Ace. I didn't know you could just not be attracted to people normally, I didn't know it was ok to not actively pursue any sexual relations, I felt guilty for so long because I wasn't attracted to anyone and people expected me to be, I finnally felt comfortable to not be attracted to people and tell relatives I wasn't looking for a relationship.

The same is so true for neurodivergence, lacking the full picture of ASD, ADHD, and Anxiety/Depression has cut off so many patients at a delicate age of development from the care they need, for YEARS. Unless you had a severe case, you just didn’t know that what you were experiencing had a name. I felt the same during my teen years: never really knew anything about transgenderism, and now, at 35 years of age, I'm way too scared to make the transition (and probably I won't even be allowed because of my depression). Ignorance made me miserable, and because of that I made the life of others around me miserable too (I was a jerk, trying to fit in with the "cool gang"). I now see ignorance as one of the tumors that will bring our society—and possibly our whole race—toward extinction.

The boundary between not knowing and knowing that cigarettes kill you apparently fell somewhere between the cohort born in the 1920s, and their parents' generation. My father (who never started smoking) said that cigarettes were colloquially known as "coffin nails" in his youth. His father said that (presumably when he was young enough not to have gotten thoroughly hooked by nicotine) he was out fishing with the radio on, heard a report on how deadly cigarettes were, threw his in the water, and never smoked again: it was news to him then, but a generation later it was common knowledge.

Always loved your videos but I don't remember any of your videos having such an effect on me. I recently came out as non-binary and was until this point still ignorant towards the fact that this actually means I haven't been living my true self up until now (and, for the most part of my life, still am not living). Even though I knew for a long time I do not identify as male I always shoved it aside as something that is only my concern and doesn't have much of an effect on my life. And even though I started to realize this was not the case a few weeks ago I still didn't realize that I was actively being ignorant toward this part of me.
Thank you for your videos, I can't even begin to imagine how many people they have helped the way they helped me (or in way more intense ways).

I feel like most of my teachers chose to live that ignorance... Just now i remember talking with my portuguese teacher (im from brazil) about my emotions and how depress i felt sometimes. His answer? "Don't think about it. You're too young to have any of this". I chose to talk with him cuz i knew that he too had some problems, he too was someone that felt different from the rest and look like it could deal with it in a health way... But in the end looks like the mental health in high school was not something to talk about it..

I didn't even hear the word "transgender" until I was a sophomore in high school, and by that point my mother had already drilled into my head about how almost every kind of body modification is a sin against God. I remember reading an article in a magazine about a trans man with a mix of horror and fascination. On one hand, I was like "this is something people can do? I'm allowed to be a boy if I want to?" and on the other, I was like "this goes against God's design for humanity. If everyone decided to choose their gender, then everyone would be a boy. Some of us have to be girls." It wasn't until much later that I learned that most girls /like/ being girls.

My first experience was a father at our school with six kids (the mom died so they said) he thought his kids needed a dad more than a mom (so he said) he was about 6’4 thin he honestly horrified most of the kids because well we just knew that one of these things just didn’t belong here, it was very unsettling, the kids were tortured by everyone I felt nothing but sadness for them, they seriously got picked on so mercilessly. Personally I don’t care what you do but you can’t ask me to pretend I am not seeing what I am seeing and as a woman, I’m not ok with Woman being something you can just change into. It isn’t right or fair to take what is ours as if it is just a thing. And I’m not ok being called a CIS woman, no you can keep your moniker of trans woman as is because that is what is the truth no matter what how you feel, it is as silly as saying a black man is a white man because he says so. Came have a silly little time learning about ignorance and censorship and near the end started crying; as a trans person who transitioned in my late twenties. I distinctly remember the first time I met a trans masc person in my senior year of high school and thought, "Wait, you can do that?"

Thank you so much for addressing how much of a toll that "how would my life have been different if someone had just told me?' question can have. I'm happy with where I"m at now, but I can't help but think how much devastation I could have saved myself if I had just been told earlier. Excellent video, love learning so much from Abigail.

Yeah, during the egg cracking process there was the realization that I've literally never dated a completely straight girl. They've all been bi, and one found out she was a lesbian. On top of that I would always say as a joke "My type is girls who like girls" in reference to how I usually date punks and alt girls who cowinkadinkily tend to be more likely to fit that description. Doxastic anxiety is an interesting term. Up until this point, I only understood it from a social perspective via shame, and using distraction/ignorance as a coping mechanism against feeling shame. It's fascinating to understand it in this different form as an ignorance from the anxiety regarding the burden of unknown future morals, versus the anxiety of potential punishment by your group for ignoring what your group considers moral.

Thank you for this video. My knowledge of ignorance has increased greatly. It's fascinating thinking about the various aspects in which ignorance affects our lives. It's good to have a safeguard against ignorance (as the Ghost of Christmas Future would attest!) but strange and unsettling to think of the ways we might need ignorance to keep order.

Perhaps this is a quibble, and I'm sure a divisive one, but I thought that the section talking about the discussion on government intervention against "woke" ideas in universities was... ironically enough, almost dangerously incomplete. It started in medias res. The reason a lot of people dislike woke academia is precisely because it does not allow all ideas to the table. It turns the seeking of knowledge into potential heresy. I'm not sanguine about government regulation in subjects taught in schools nor in terms of what is acceptable at a university. But to say that a dislike of woke doctrine and ideology is the refuge of the censorious is a half-truth at most.

The presentation, as always, was wonderful, and the thoroughness of the subject was so, so high - especially when condensed into 30 minutes. Such a rich subject, and so much more to know about ignorance!

So glad I found this channel - subscribed recently, and the content is really interesting, and well explained. I've always liked philosophy, but somehow "doxastic" has not entered my vocabulary before, and "doxastic anxiety" is such a useful term! You see it so often in people, and I've been guilty of it myself, on a few subjects; though as I get older, I've tried to avoid avoiding learning about uncomfortable stuff.

(I've been a vegetarian about a year and a half, which reduced my doxastic anxiety about the subject, though didn't quite get rid of it. I fully acknowledge that veganism is a stronger ethical position, I'm just not ready to quite go there, at least yet.)

Ignorance is a form of lying to yourself. It is an act of indirect self violence. Distorts one perception of external and/or internal reality. Poverty causes hermeneutical injustice.I love learning something new. Thank you for the thought provoking topics. I love the syphon filter noise!!

I know that this comment is going to be buried, but as a young trans person, these videos mean the world to me.
We are living in very different times now, compared to when she was growing up, but these videos still really affect me, more than most other content out there.
I’m not even sure quite why they hit so hard in comparison to everything else, maybe it’s just that the topic of trans isn’t totally isolated from any other discussion. Whatever it is, every video that she’s made- especially the recent ones- really do hit me like nothing else. I feel so lucky that I’m able to access this, it seriously means the world.

I'm an older trans guy although new on HRT and I feel the same way. I love how Abigail makes transgender issues part of the conversation, but not the whole of the conversation. It's very... normal feeling. Being trans doesn't need to be ALL of my life and who I am, but it can be PART of my life and who I am. Your comment (and you) has been seen.

as a transperson growing up in liverpool in the early 2000s i feel like this helped me explain alot about myself funny enough. im lucky enough to transition in my early 20s so i didnt lose as much time but i personally know if i just understood myself more like you are seeing with kids in schools now alot of pain and self loathing couldve been avoided.

My mom is deliberty ignorant. Anytime I asked her take steps to fix the situation she refused and shutdown. I said I should do college while in HS cuase I would not be able pay it after I graduate. My mother said "Worry about that when you graduate" and than I got kicked out at 18. I knew this was gonna happen and tried to prepare but I wasn't allowed to do anything that could have saved me a stable adulthood cuase my parents where in charge of me. So I had no choice in getting ahead.

It is interesting to have a name for these kind of mechanisms.
Tbh, I chose to ignore the death of my grand father for some time of the day until I was ready for it. Then I cried miserably and lost all those emotions, and then chose to ignore it, until the time was ripe again to work on these emotions.
Ignorance is my way to live and handle my life, but in moderation.

Also... i have to think of the banality of evil when listening to this video... Of Hannah Ahrendt.

I'm sure everyone here has experienced some kind of deliberate taught ignorance, especially with regards to being queer, but the story of the woman finding out about postpartum depression was what got me. I'm adopted (it was planned before I was even born) and I just recently turned 18. Throughout my childhood I was very nonchalant about my (open) adoption because everyone around me was very nonchalant about it. It was something that had happened; we had a holiday about it once a year; we met up with my birth parents; and we never discussed it beyond that except in a very brief and awkward way. Over the course of those 18 years, I was bound to start thinking about what might have been different if I weren't adopted, or if I were adopted by different people, and of course I developed coping mechanisms— certain thoughts to stop myself from spiralling into the daydream of an entirely different time branch in which I was living the perfect life with perfect parents. But, naturally, once I was allowed to start spending more time with my birth family (including a week-long, all-expenses-paid trip to stay with my mother in the most transphobic state at the beginning of pride month, what a lovely time) I found my coping mechanisms inadequate, to the point where they were proven wrong. That's a long story to add to an already long comment, so I won't explain, but I was broken. I'm autistic, so I find it incredibly hard to label my emotions or even recognize their presence; it took me over 18 years to realize what I was feeling was grief: I needed to grieve something I never had. This was supported by a quick internet search that confirmed I wasn't crazy for needing to grieve a lost opportunity. But after an entire life of people expecting me to be fine with my adoption, imagine my surprise when I found out through a Discord server that there are therapists who specialize in adoption trauma— there were people out there who knew this whole time that I would be messed up from an event that had been present, overshadowing me, for my entire life, and there were other people who knew they were messed up and were working on how to fix it! It's liberating, just like the woman in the story said, to know that you aren't alone, that there's a name for this, but it also breeds some resentment that I was never told, just expected to get along fine without it.
Sorry, this has been an insanely long summary of something I'm still struggling to work through, but if you have a similar story I'd love to hear it! Feel free to vent or whatever you need, and remember you're not alone in your experiences, even if you don't have a name for them yet <3

The not being told about trans existing hit hard. I knew from the time I was 5 years old and on that I wanted to be a girl, but because I didn't know that there was a way to make that a thing, I just suffered in silence constantly wishing I could become a girl. Then I met my first girlfriend in my adult life who was transgender, and it was like an explosion of realization. Thinking about how my life could have been different if I'd been able to start Hormones and such before I was 24 years old really is something that haunts me, though I try not to think about it too often.

Also, wearing neck coverings as a transwoman is genius, I really need to do that more often.
