Black And Blue
Van Halen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slip n' slide, push it in
Bitch sure got the rhythm
I'm holding back, yeah, I got control

Hooked into her system
Don't draw the line
Honey, I ain't through with you
The harder the better (let's do it 'til)
We're black and blue
Well, you never know when love will come
Gotta get it while you got it
A little bit of everything, even when it hurts

Sure feels good
Don't draw the line
Honey, I ain't through with you
The harder the better (let's do it 'til)
We're black and blue

Yo mama
Black and blue
Gotta, gotta, gotta, make it right
Ow, come on baby
Black and blue

Ow
Uh, uh don't draw the line
Honey, I ain't through with you
The harder the better
We'll do it 'til we're black and blue, ow

Don't draw the line
Baby, I ain't through with you
The harder the better (let's do it 'til)
We're black and blue

The wetter the better
We'll do it we're black and blue

Uh, uh uh
Do it 'til we're black and blue, yeah
Oh come on baby
The wetter the better let's do it 'til
We're black and blue

Come on baby
Oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Van Halen's song "Black and Blue" suggest a sexual encounter between the singer and their partner. The use of metaphors such as "slip n' slide" and "hooked into her system" imply a physical attraction and desire. The singer expresses their enjoyment of the experience, even when it hurts, and their willingness to push the limits and go "harder," "wetter," and "black and blue."

However, it's important to note that the language used in the lyrics objectifies and dehumanizes the female partner, referring to her as a "bitch" and using language that implies dominance and control. This raises questions about the power dynamics within the relationship and whether or not the encounter is consensual.

Overall, the lyrics to "Black and Blue" are open to interpretation and could be seen as both a celebration of sexual desire and a problematic representation of a sexual encounter.

RIP Eddie, you will be missed. Such a HUGE part of my teen years.

I was only 8 years old when I first heard Van Halen 1978 I became a fan and will always be a fan Eddie Van Halen went to play at a higher venue his music will live forever.

@Nelson Cheng The gospel charges us with being humble, to not assume that God loves us more than those we consider to be 'sinners' ... yes, you were coming off as a judge. That was obvious. Not too late to repent of the fake and phony version of Christianity that you have sadly been taught is the real thing, and come back down to the rock of ages.

Adam Crane Guilford

@Nelson Cheng Yes, I am a baptized, avowed and unashamed Christian. My brother Eddie built his house on rock. I would hope I am mistaken, but it seems to me you may be building your's on sand. If you are daily thanking God for making you better and holier than Eddie and the rest of us. You might want to apply OUR bible to YOURself for a change. As for your suggestion of hellfire, the wise ones know it is written than even Abraham rests unconsious with the rest of the dead in Hades (=hell) .... the word of God is a parable, uninteligible to anyone dealing in non-existent self righteousness. For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory, including you and lil ole eye ... we are looking for that grace and unconditional love of "Real Relief" . If you think you are saving your soul, you are more likely losing it by thinking it is your's to save. If you are a Christian, your soul is no longer owned by you. And you have no place to say such spiteful things about a TRUE VIRTUOSO like Eddie Van Halen ... that is why I am giving you Real Relief

@Adam Crane Guilford Are you a Christian? If anyone is judging anybody, it is you judging me, not I judging Eddie Van Halen. My comment was quite short, so short that there was no room for "judging" Eddie. I began by addressing Chris Fowler, who wrote RIP for Eddie Van Halen. My point was to correct the notion that everyone who dies is at peace, which isn't so, according to the Bible. The Bible clearly says that the unsaved will go to judgment while the saved will go to blessedness with God. Then I quoted John 3:35-36. No judging Eddie here. Then I asked Chris Fowler why he thought Eddie was at peace. The reason I asked, is that it is common knowledge that Van Halen lived an immoral lifestyle. (At least some of the members had sex with young women at their concerts. Their songs also reverberate with sexually explicit lyrics (eg. Black and Blue, Feel my love tonight) ). Therefore, unless Chris Fowler was not aware of Van Halen's immoral lifestyle, wishing RIP would be an unfitting thing to do. But again, is that judging Eddie? What do you mean by judging? Then, I posted a webpage, on which the creator of the webpage exposed the evil of the band. I wanted to use the webpage to expose the evil of Eddie and his band, because being a defender of women's rights, I hate rock stars using their fans sexually. But exposing sins is not necessarily judging. Ephesians 5:11 says, "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. " As long as I don't have a self-righteous attitude over Eddie ( which YOU accuse me of having), then exposing evil is not judging. As far as I know, I don't have this attitude. I wasn't thinking I was better than he. (That is what YOU accused me of.) What is true, however, is that I feel very strongly against men exploiting women, especially sexually. But having righteous anger towards sin is not a sin. Jesus displayed righteous anger when He cleansed the temple in Jerusalem. Jesus said His followers are to be salt and light. Therefore, exposing evil isn't necessarily judging. But I think you have judged me, as you accused me of being arrogant and self righteous over Eddie. I was thinking no such thoughts. You have basically projected your own thoughts on me, when I wasn't even thinking those thoughts. Now THAT's judging! But I expect these kinds of accusations/misunderstandings as I spread the Gospel and expose evil. They come with the territory.

Adam Crane Guilford

@Nelson Cheng "Judge not lest you be judged yourself" may be a parable you should chew on a bit.... or perhaps this condemnation of self righteous types (like yourself?) from the book of Luke> .. "Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: 10 “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. 11 The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer[a]: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! 12 I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.” You are no less wretched than Eddie, except perhaps that he built a house on Rock, and you may be building your's on the sand of arrogant self righteousness. Maybe you could for once in your life, re-evaluate your faith with a long look into the mirror before Christ comes back and rebukes the den of vipers who claimed to follow him. But didn't know how to be unconditionally loving and kind.... how dare you set yourself up as the judge of a man like Eddie. Who was kind and charitable &~
