Eagles Fly
Van Halen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sunday morning 9 a.m.
I saw fire in the sky
I felt my heart pound in my chest
I heard an eagle cry
Now I´m alive I can breathe the air
Feel the wind, smell the earth in the air
I watch an eagle rise above the trees
Project myself into what he sees
Hey-
Take me away
Come on and fly me away
Take me up so high
Where eagles fly
I often dream I sail through the sky
I´ve always wished I could fly
The simple life of a bird on the wing
Oh Lord, I could sing
Take me away
Come on fly me away
Lift me up so high
Where eagles fly
Oh yeah-
I´m alive, I breathe the air
Wash the earth from my face
I catch a glimpse of another dream
I turn, I look but there´s no trace
Take me away
Come on, fly me away
I want to fly away
Pick me up so high
Where eagles fly
Oh yeah-
Eagles fly, oh, take me away
Eagles fly, oh, take me away

Come on, let´s fly away where eagles fly
Come on, fly away where eagles fly

Overall Meaning

The song "Eagles Fly" by Van Halen is a powerful track that speaks to the human desire for freedom and adventure. The first verse starts with the singer observing a breathtaking sunrise on a Sunday morning. The imagery of the "fire in the sky" is powerful and sets the tone for the rest of the song. The singer then experiences a physical response to the beauty around him, with his heart pounding in his chest and hearing the cry of an eagle. This moment of awe and wonder leads him to feel alive and connected to nature.

The chorus is a call to action, with the singer asking to be taken away and flown up high where eagles fly. The desire to be free and experience the world from above is a common theme in many songs, and "Eagles Fly" captures this feeling perfectly. The second verse continues this theme, with the singer dreaming of flying and living the simple life of a bird on the wing. This desire for freedom is further emphasized by the line "Oh Lord, I could sing," which speaks to the idea that true freedom allows us to be our most authentic selves.

In the final verse, the singer reflects on the transience of life and the fleeting nature of dreams. He catches a glimpse of another dream but it disappears before he can grasp it. This sense of longing and unfulfilled potential is a poignant reminder that life is short and we should seize every opportunity to soar.

Overall, "Eagles Fly" is a powerful anthem for personal freedom and adventure. Its soaring melody and lyrics inspire listeners to chase their dreams and live life to the fullest.

Sunday morning, nine A.M.
I saw fire in the sky
I felt my heart pound in my chest
I heard an eagle cry
Hey!
I'm alive when I breathe the air
I feel the wind smell the earth in the air
I watch an eagle rise above the trees
Project myself into what he sees
So take me away
Come on fly me away
Lift me up so high
Where eagles fly
I often dreamed that I could sail through the sky
I've always wished I could fly
The simple life of a bird on the wing
Oh, Lord, I could sing
Take me away
Come on, fly me away
Lift me up so high
Where eagles fly
Now I'm alive and I breathe the air
They wash the earth from my face
I catch a glimpse of another dream
I turned, I looked, I turned and looked again, 'cause I see no trace
Take me away
Come on, fly me away
I want to fly away, yeah
Pick me up so high
Where eagles fly
Yeah
Oh, yeah!
C'mon baby!
Where eagles fly
Come on take me away
I want to fly away
Where eagles fly
You can run me away
Chase me away
Sail me away
Fly me away
Run away with me, baby
Where eagles fly
Oh, yeah...

My favorite part about this version was when the band joined in at the end and Eddie did a very tasty lead over that.

So sorry for her passing, always remember she's right beside you everyday, not in body but her spirit. I'm sure she's smiling down at you and singing with every blow of the wind. Keep the faith it will carry you through.

The best years of Van Halen were when Sammy was with them. Love, love, love him!!

@Undersiege1 and he can even substitute as lead guitarist while Eddie's on keys

@demonhoopa I agree. And Sammy wrote some great tunes, and oh yeah. He can actually play an instrument also.

I’ll say this. I saw both versions of Van Halen live twice. This narrative now about Roth being a better front man is a myth. He was GREAT on camera. In music videos Roth was a genius performer. But because he did high kicks and shaked his ass did not make him a great front man in concert. He didn’t engage with the audience as well as Sammy (and others) and didn’t really generate any real energy. Van Halen had far more energy in concert with Sammy and sounded infinitely better.

That aint what Eddie thought...
