Known as "Van the Man" by his fans, Morrison first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the Northern Irish band Them, writing their 1964 hit "Gloria". A few years later, Morrison left the band for a successful solo career, starting with the album Astral Weeks.
Morrison has pursued an idiosyncratic musical path. Much of his music is tightly structured around the conventions of American soul and R&B, such as the popular singles "Brown Eyed Girl", "Moondance", "Domino", and "Wild Night". An equal part of his catalogue consists of lengthy, loosely connected, spiritually inspired musical journeys that show the influence of Celtic tradition, jazz, and stream-of-consciousness narrative, such as his classic album Astral Weeks and lesser known works such as Veedon Fleece and Common One. The two strains together are sometimes referred to as "Celtic Soul," and Morrison rejects the characterization of his genre of music as Rock, citing Elvis Presley as a non-influence.
He continues to perform regularly and achieved his highest U.S. chart position (number ten on the Billboard 200) with his 2008 album, Keep It Simple.

Singing songs about Edith Piaf's soul
And I hear blue strains of no regredior
Across the street from Cathedral Notre Dame
Meanwhile back in San Francisco
We're trying hard to make this whole thing blend
As we sit upon this jagged
And it's a long way to Buffalo
It's a long way to Belfast city too
And I'm hoping the choice won't blow the hoist
'Cause this town, they bit off more than they can chew.
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on

Saint Dominic's Preview
All the orange boxes are scattered
Against the safeway's supermarket in the rain
And everybody feels so determined
Not to feel anyone else's pain
No one's making no commitments
To anybody but themselves
Talkin' behind closed doorways
Tryin' to get outside, get outside of empty shells
And for every cross cuttin' country corner, country corner
For every Hank Williams railroad train that cried
And all the chains, badges, flags and emblems
And every strain on brain and every eye
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on

And the restaurant tables are completely covered
The record company has paid out for the wine
You got everything in the world you ever wanted
Right about now your face should wear a smile
That's the way it all should happen
When you're in, when you're in the state you're in
You've got your pen and notebook ready
I think it's about time, time for us to begin
And meanwhile we're over in a 52nd Street apartment
Socializing with the wino few
Just to be hip and get wet with the jet set
But they're flying too high to see my point of view
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on
As we gaze out on, as we gaze out on

Saint Dominic's Preview
The lyrics of Van Morrison's song Saint Dominic's Preview present a contrasting picture of two different cities: Paris and San Francisco. The opening lines describe a street in Paris, where a shammy is cleaning windows and singing songs about Edith Piaf's soul. The singer hears "blue strains of no regredior" across the street from Cathedral Notre Dame, which might refer to songs of regret or melancholy, typical of French music. In contrast, the scene shifts to San Francisco, where the singer and his friend are trying to make a "jagged story block" blend, possibly meaning that they are trying to make sense of the disjointed urban landscape. The distance to Buffalo and Belfast suggests a yearning for home or a sense of loss or displacement. The singer expresses the hope that the town won't "blow the hoist," meaning that it won't be overwhelmed by its own ambitions or promises.
The second verse continues the theme of detachment and isolation, as people in San Francisco are determined not to feel each other's pain or make any commitments. The references to Hank Williams and country music might suggest a longing for connection or authenticity in a world of artificiality and posturing. Similarly, the final verse describes a scene of excess and complacency, where record companies pay for wine, everything is at one's fingertips, and one's face should wear a smile. The mention of the pen and the notebook suggests the possibility of creative expression or a search for meaning beyond material success, while the contrast with the "wino few" and the "jet set" highlights the choice between two paths in life. The final refrain describes "them freedom marching" out in the street, suggesting a movement towards liberation or social justice, while the repetition of "Saint Dominic's Preview" throughout the song adds a mystical or transcendent quality to the imagery.

Van Morrison – Saint Dominic's Preview Lyrics
Saint Dominic's Preview is a biographical look on Van's life up to that moment. He goes from cleaning windows to huge stardom. +3.
@LargieBoy
Honestly I’m going through a hard time right now but this song pulls me through. Van Morrisons voice is exceptional ❤️❤️
@lasttriptotulsa1144
One of the most beautifully written and recorded songs in the history of popular music.
@bribos99
I always thought Tupelo Honey was his best...
until I bought this album and didn't play anything else but this song for a week!
1 and 1a...
@kenhabeeb
Totally agree, and the beautiful pedal steel guitar and horn parts are no small contribution to the effort.
@osheadkkm
but so tastefully restrained. the art of subtlety. 'as we gaze out on..." the musical equivalent of Vonneguts "and so it goes...".lol.
@goldenageofdinosaurs7192
LastTripToTulsa I only wish it wasn’t so clean. I think this song would be a little better if it had a bit less production & a was little more jangly rhythmically. I’m sure it sounds that way live.
I love this song so much.Van is one of those rare artists that I can listen to & find tears streaming down my face.
@deanos72
LastTripToTulsa 100% spot on
@patrickgriffin2292
One of Van's best songs and truly one of his best albums. Again thank you Van Morrison, for all you have given us. You are truly a genius.
@Memorex996

@michaeldematteis3409
