Johnny recorded as a member of the 1980's southern rock band The Johnny Van Zant Band which released albums in 1980, 1981 and 1982. The band shortened its name to Van Zant for the release of its fourth album in 1985, the eponymous Van Zant, which saw some chart success with "You've Got to Believe in Love" and "I'm a Fighter". However, this band was not the same as the current version of Van Zant and did not include brother Donnie.
Johnny released another album under his full name in 1990, but spent most of his time in that period singing for the Lynyrd Skynyrd reunion group. He joined up with Donnie, and they revived the Van Zant name to release an album in 1998, which led to a follow up album in 2001. They have also released two albums to the country music format: 2005's Get Right with the Man and 2007's My Kind of Country. Overall, the group has had two singles on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks charts (the prior incarnation of Van Zant also had two), and six on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts.

It got me no-where, it just drove me insane
Single dumb an' stupid, baby, wasn't I a fool?
Ain't nothin' better than lovin' you, hey
I've meditated on a single drop of rain
Heard one hand clappin', there was silence in my brain
It showed me somethin', baby, I already knew
I been high, a time or two
Those days are done
Now, you're the one I'm turned on to
I know, now, what I'm gonna do
The master-plan for this old man is
Lovin' you, lovin' you, lovin' you
God made your body, baby, he built it well
If He made somethin' better then He kept it for himself
When we get to Heaven, girl, I bet He'll tell you too
Ain't nothin' better than lovin' you
I been high, a time or two
Those days are done
Now, you're the one I'm turned on to
I know, now, what I'm gonna do
The master-plan for this old man is
Lovin' you, lovin' you, lovin' you
After tryin' everything
I found my life's Venus
I been high, a time or two
Those days are done
Now, you're the one I'm turned on to
I know now, what I'm gonna do
The master-plan for this old man is
Lovin' you, lovin' you, lovin' you
I been high, yeah, a time or two
Those days are done
Now, you're the one, girl, I'm turned on to
I know, now, what I'm gonna do
The master-plan for this old man is
Lovin' you, lovin' you, oh, lovin' you
I'm turning on
Ain't nothing better than loving you
These lyrics express the singer's realization that despite trying various substances and spiritual practices, nothing compares to the feeling of loving his partner. The opening lines describe the singer's attempts to find fulfillment through alcohol and marijuana, but ultimately he concludes that they only drove him insane and left him feeling "single dumb and stupid." The next verse sees him attempt meditation, only to have it confirm what he already knew: that loving his partner is the best thing in his life.
In the chorus, the singer emphasizes that he's done with his past experiences and has found the love of his life in his partner. He describes their relationship as the "master-plan" for his life, and vows to cherish and love them forever. The final verse has the singer express his admiration for his partner's body and speculate that even God couldn't make anything better.
Overall, the song is a love anthem that celebrates the joy and fulfillment of finding true love. It acknowledges the singer's past struggles and mistakes, but ultimately emphasizes that loving his partner is the key to his happiness and well-being.
