Peter Hammill blijft steeds in alle bands het primaire lid. Zanger, pianist, gitarist, en belangrijkste auteur. Toch blijft hij nog aarzelen tussen 't vormen van een groep en start een solo-carrière. In 1969, het hervormde Van der Graaf Generator, Keith Ellis op bas, Hugh Banton Hammond orgel, en Guy Evans op drums. Het spel Banton orgel, op basis van gedegen onderzoek, is de nieuwe speerpunt van de groep. De gitaar wordt niet langer beschouwd als een solist, maar op zijn beurt als een manier van het openen van nieuwe geluiden. Het orgel werd zwaar verzadigde en gewijzigd en wordt het handelsmerk van de groep. Het zelfde jaar komt het eerste album van Van der Graaf Generator. Keith Ellis wordt dan vervangen door Nic Potter, terwijl David Jackson zich bij de groep aansluit. Jackson word tweede grote figuur, in aanvulling op deelname aan het schrijven van sommige nummers. Jackson groeit uit tot een meerwaarde in het concert van enge titels.
Van der Graaf Generator bereikt voldoende erkenning om een echte carrière te beginnen. Het label Tony Stratton-Smith, "Het beroemde Charisma label", brengt de vorming van steun, vergelijkbaar met Genesis: vrijheid van keuze in titels, illustraties en experimentele concerten ...
Tijdens de opname van het volgende album, verlaat Nic Potter de band. Hij zal niet worden vervangen. Baspartijen wordt nu gespeeld door de pedalen van het Hammond orgel Banton,
De groep komt op de voorgrond op het podium van het Charisma Show, een rondleiding georganiseerd door de platenmaatschappij om een forum te bieden voor haar drie vlaggenschepen: Van der Graaf Generator, Genesis en Lindisfarne. De belijdenis van Peter Gabriel, Genesis zanger en reisgenoot van de band Hammill, In 1971 steeg de inzet van de groep met de release van haar beroemdste album "Pawn Hearts". Van der Graaf Generator voegt een vleugje van zijn invloeden en barokke contrapunt aan het orgel. Maar uiteindelijk is het de jazz dat de meeste opmerkelijke invloed vormt. Maar de groep wordt ontbonden in 1972 na een grote tour, waarschijnlijk als gevolg van financiële problemen.
Hervormd in 1975, in eerste instantie alleen voor de duur van een Tour in Frankrijk, neemt Van der Graaf Generator een van zijn meest representatieve albums op, "Godbluff". De band herhaalt het volgende jaar met "Still Life" dit succes. Hammill zal het volgende jaar opnieuw een band vormen onder de naam "Van der Graaf." Deze verandering van identiteit gaat gepaard met een verandering in tint als de twee belangrijkste leiders van de soundtrack ontbreken. Violist Graham Smith werd aangeworven terwijl Nic Potter terug naar de bas grijpt. De groep begint aan een meesterlijke tour vereeuwigd in een album "Vital" in 1978.
En dan toch weer als vanouds, word de groep ontbonden voor de laatste keer.
In de volgende decennia,herleeft de herinnering dankzij enkele compilaties, terwijl Peter Hammill gekend blijft als solo artiest. De jaren 2000 zag een langzame heropleving van de groep in zijn recentste hervorming. Op grote schaal wordt vandaag "Vandergraaf Generator", erkend als onderschatte en onterecht vergeten deel van de experimentele rock.
