Blue Pool
Vanessa Carlton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Man, it's so nice to see you again
You're the great blue pool in L.A
And I close my book, move my bag, make some space
'Cause it's time to give that song a break
So tell me now how these few years have been
When it's living to honour the best
And I have been well, I've saved you a smile
These feelings they come and go fast
Light your cigarette, see the fame in your eyes
Sing me that new song you sing
The time for you and I was never quite right
It matters and means everything

'Cause the garden walls grew quick
Before you know, you're outside of it
And the ivy's coming in
It's so beautiful if you can find it

And time, she's always kept you on her good side
Some people they still fight their fate
I understood clear what you said with your eyes
We all speak in different ways

'Cause the garden walls grew quick
Before you know, you're outside of it
And the ivy's coming in
It's so beautiful if you can find it
The garden walls grow quick
Before you know, you're outside of it

And the ivy's coming in
It's so beautiful if you can find it

Overall Meaning

In the song Blue Pool by Vanessa Carlton, the singer talks about meeting someone she knew back in LA. She refers to this person as the great blue pool, which could be a metaphor for something special or unique. She puts her things aside and asks how the past couple of years have been for this person. The conversation flows as they share their experiences and feelings. They address how life can be unpredictable and how we all have different ways of communicating.

The lyrics paint a picture of how people often build walls around their lives and how the garden walls grow quickly, separating them from the rest of the world. Carlton mentions how the ivy is coming in, which could be a metaphor for not being stuck behind those walls and instead, finding beauty and growth beyond them. She embraces the idea that everything around us can be beautiful if we can find it.

Overall, Blue Pool is a song about reconnecting with someone from the past and acknowledging how life may have changed, but there are still similarities between them. The song brings out the idea that life can be unpredictable, but we can always find something beautiful if we look beyond the walls we create.

How the heck do companies find songs like this? They always choose really good ones!

I just can't believe how much she's grown as a musician. It's amazing. And don't feel sad. I find the best music through ads.

@orangewedgesโ€‹โ€‹โ€‹โ€‹ lol some people dont have time to search. That's why people advertise and promote so people can discover and try new things.

Vanessa Carlton has been around for well over a decade. While I'm glad people are taking notice of her beautiful music which is a departure from the stuff she made over fourteen years ago, I'm sad that it takes a lotion commercial to get you guys to realize that good music is already all around us...you just have to look for it yourself and don't wait for corporations to pick and choose music for you.

Loved it! I'm so glad Vanessa decided to stick to indie, Rabbits On The Run and the Blue Pool EP have her most honest songs in my opinion. They touch my soul in some way.

whoa this is like when one really talented artist makes a song everyone knows and then keeps doing their own thing which is super beautiful and top notch aesthetic genius and has a small following who know who know its so good.

I wouldn't have listened if there wasn't the novelty of my exposure to just one song that maybe some people are turned off and put away from it.

In a sense this is what I want to be as an artist. maybe you do good stuff that everyone knows is good. but not everyone knows. but people know like one good song. So you get to have mild recognition you can use maybe just as a means to make more music. wowow

Heard this first at a small venue she played at Spanish Moon bar in Baton Rouge, LA. And yes she sounds just as wonderful live.
