Vanessa Carlton first began playing the piano as a toddler, continuing on an artistic road with her attendance at the School of American Ballet in New York, a path she would eventually abandon in favor of songwriting. She re-embraced the piano and began performing in bars and clubs across Manhattan. While studying at Columbia University, Carlton was signed to Interscope Records, but made her formal debut on A&M under veteran producer Ron Fair.
Her debut album in April 2002, Be Not Nobody, resonated with audiences of all ages world-wide, especially the hit piano single “A Thousand Miles,” which reached the Top 5 on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart, #1 in Australia, and Top 10 in the UK. Carlton went on to earn 2003 Grammy nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist (“A Thousand Miles”). The album witnessed global success, reaching Gold status in over 10 countries, and Platinum status in Asian territories, such as Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Taiwan.
Her second album Harmonium (2004), which yielded the single “White Houses,” continued to inspire an increasingly loyal global fan base and garnered some the best reviews of her career.
Her record release in 2007, Heroes & Thieves “might be my first thematic record,” Carlton says, adding that the songs reveal themselves like chapters in a book, one that fans can crack open (Vanessa has often explained during her live shows that the second single from "Heroes & Thieves" entitled "Hands On Me" is the second chapter to the album). Paying homage to the area of Manhattan where most of its songs were written, the first single off of the 2007 record, appropriately dubbed “Nolita Fairytale,” is a syncopated, upbeat piece that paints a dramatic musical landscape. “ That song is really about finding joy in unexpected environments. How sometimes losing things makes you realize what you have, which is like a quasi fairytale,” says Carlton. Heroes & Thieves was recorded in the San Francisco studio of Third Eye Blind founder Stephan Jenkins and the Los Angeles studio of producer/songwriter Linda Perry.
Vanessa's fourth studio album, "Rabbits On The Run" was released on July 26th, 2011. Material for this album was produced by Steve Osborne (U2, B-52’s, KT Tunstall), and was recorded in the UK at Peter Gabriel's well-renowned Real World Studios.
Speaking with Songfacts about the lead single Carousel in a 2011 interview, Carlton explained that she wrote the song in a dream where the "da na na na na" tune was floating around.

Break To Save
Vanessa Carlton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
My heart has turned to stone
I have the power to leave this
To love my home and still outgrow
I am free to redefine me
Nothing more terrifying
I'm about to say something
That will lose you.
That will cut our ties
I was only dreaming
Of a future fantasy
I would be the savior
Not the breaker of the family
Do you know who your enemy is
Could it be the one you love
What I love starts to become me
DNA map in my blood
I was only dreaming
Of a future fantasy
I would be the savior
Not the breaker of the family
I didn't see it coming
Thought I could bring you with me
I will need to break to save
The truth that's left in me. (inside of me)
Hindsight is twenty twenty
When you're in it it's hard to tell
Living with the sinking feeling
working against myself
I was only dreaming
Of a future fantasy
where I would be the savior
Not the breaker of the family
I didn't see it coming
But I would do it all the same
I can fall to pieces
When I'm on the way to change, break to save
Looking for grace, for beauty
Walk into the unknown
I leave to redefine me
But I love you and I let you go
The lyrics of Vanessa Carlton's song "Break To Save" explore themes of self-discovery, sacrifice, and the complexities of familial relationships. The opening lines, "Looking for grace and beauty, my heart has turned to stone," convey a sense of longing and dissatisfaction. The singer yearns for something more meaningful and fulfilling in their life, but feels emotionally disconnected and closed off.
The lyrics continue with, "I have the power to leave this, to love my home and still outgrow." Here, the singer acknowledges their ability to make a change and break free from their current situation. They recognize that they can simultaneously love their home and family, while also needing to grow and evolve in order to find their true self.
The next stanza, "I am free to redefine me, nothing more terrifying. I'm about to say something that will lose you, that will cut our ties," explores the fear and uncertainty that comes with self-redefinition. The singer acknowledges that their process of self-discovery may also lead to the loss of relationships and emotional ties with loved ones.
The following verse, "I was only dreaming of a future fantasy, I would be the savior, not the breaker of the family," further illustrates the singer's desire to be a positive influence and source of strength within their family. They had hoped to bring about positive change, but now realizes that their actions might have unintended consequences, potentially causing them to be seen as a "breaker" instead.
The chorus, repeated throughout the song, emphasizes the singer's inner conflict and self-doubt. The line "I didn't see it coming, thought I could bring you with me" suggests that the singer had underestimated the challenges they would face on their personal journey. Despite this, they acknowledge their determination to persist: "I will need to break to save the truth that's left in me."
As the song progresses, the lyrics touch upon the difficulty of recognizing one's true adversary and the blurring of lines between love and conflict. The line "Do you know who your enemy is, could it be the one you love" suggests a confusion and questioning of loyalty within relationships. The reference to DNA in the line "What I love starts to become me, DNA map in my blood" indicates a deep connection between love and identity, hinting at the ingrained patterns and influences within familial bonds.
The lyrics continue to explore the singer's self-reflection and acceptance of their choices: "I didn't see it coming, but I would do it all the same." Although they may not have anticipated the outcomes, they express a willingness to embrace the consequences and embrace growth. The line "I can fall to pieces when I'm on the way to change, break to save" highlights the vulnerability and inner turmoil experienced during the process of self-transformation.
Finally, the closing lines, "Looking for grace, for beauty, walk into the unknown, I leave to redefine me, but I love you and I let you go," encapsulate the bittersweet nature of the singer's journey. They recognize the need to explore uncharted territories and redefine themselves, mindful of the sacrifices and letting go of attachments, while still holding love in their heart.
In essence, "Break To Save" encapsulates the internal struggle of self-discovery and redefinition, as well as the complexity of maintaining relationships within a changing identity. The lyrics convey a longing for personal growth and the acknowledgment that sometimes, in order to find oneself, one must break away and make sacrifices along the way.

Amidst the dreams of what could be,
The future that we yearn to see,
There lies a truth we must confront,
A path to take, a battlefront.
We search for grace, for beauty rare,
Our hearts turn hard, we cannot bear,
To live a life that's not our own,
To leave our home and outgrow.
But what if in our quest to be,
We lose the ones we love dearly?
Our enemy, could it be,
The very ones that set us free?
The ties we break, the truth inside,
A cost to pay, a price we can't hide,
Hindsight's clear, but in the now,
We fight ourselves, we don't know how.
But still we dream of futures bright,
Where we're the saviors, shining light,
But sometimes, we must break to save,
To find the truth that's in our veins.
For in the end, when all is done,
We'll walk into the unknown,
Redefine ourselves, let go,
And find the beauty in the flow.
