After the first EP was completed, they began working on a new EP tentatively titled "Terrordactyl", which had 9 brand new tracks prepared, but the tracks never saw the light of day as they called it quits after numerous attempts of finding a permanent drummer. Jeremy began numerous solo projects (Broken Speech, Dirty HZ, et al) with the styles ranging from Indie rock to IDM/Breakbeat. Shawn joined former Radio Fiction member Jesse Gale to form Corduroy Frogs, which is currently at a standstill.
After a 2 year hiatus, the band regrouped with founding members Jeremy Ciccone (now on vocals and drums) and Tharon Weighill (bass, percussion), and recruited friends Jesse Gale (guitar, percussion, keyboards [formerly of Radio Fiction, Wrecknodrome, & Corduroy Frogs]) and Garrick O'Connor (guitar, keyboards [formerly of Orange Apples & Broken Speech]) to join them.
The band has played a few low-key shows in the San Francisco Bay Area, and playing songs such as "Death Team", "You Brood of Vipers", "Fresh Air", "Years Mapped Out", and new songs including "Parallels", "Starlight", "Kill Taxi via Lovely", "Romania", "Hot As Coals", "Murdercycle" and "Troublespreader".
Unfortunately, the band has had a falling out and has disbanded once again. Jesse, Tharon, & Garrick have gone on to work on a new project, still unnamed with no official line-up.
Fresh Air
Vanishing Act Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Only a change they all regret
Things are slowing down
The Face is burned with a frown
Trapped
Trapped in time
My body thinks so
Seeing metallic stars
Metallic meaning
Get some
Fresh air
Get some fresh air
Fresh air
Get some fresh air
Stop what's happening
It seems you're giving up everything
What's nothing
What is nothing
Don't let go of me
Promise you'll always keep me close
You let go of me
You promised you'd always keep me close
You let go of me
You promised you'd always keep me close
You let go
You promised you'd always keep me close
So give me some sugar
Cuz It's what I need
Funny how the simple things in life
They become the finer things
You can open your jar of beans
You can spread them around the bed
Crack open my chest
Carry them around
Like they were air
Just like air
Some fresh fresh air
Fresh air
The opening lines of Vanishing Act's song Fresh Air highlight the ironic fact that the changes we often seek in our lives in search of happiness may not always lead to the desired outcome. In fact, these changes can lead to regret, and leave us feeling trapped in time. The slower pace compounds the sense of frustration and dissatisfaction, etching a permanent frown on our faces. The reference to metallic stars is open to interpretation, but there seems to be a sense of disillusionment and emptiness that these stars represent.
The chorus is a straightforward call to action – get some fresh air. This could be a literal desire to escape the suffocating atmosphere, but it could also be a metaphorical plea to shake off the stagnation and start afresh. The question "what's nothing?" seems to indicate the futility of our actions, and possibly the insignificance of our existence. The lines "don't let go of me, promise you'll always keep me close" hint at a relationship, and the desperate need for companionship and support. The repeated pledge to stay close is a plea to cling onto hope and not give in to despair.
The final lines of the song bring a sense of whimsy and lightness, with the singer asking for a little sugar – something sweet in their life. They acknowledge the transformative power of seemingly insignificant things – the simple joy of a jar of beans, for instance. The idea of carrying these simple things like air around with them adds to the sense of liberation, as if the singer has found a way to break free. Overall, Fresh Air is a song that captures the modern malaise – the desire for change, the sense of being trapped, and the hope for something better.
