Vanity
Vanity Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The song "Vanity" by the Japanese rock band, The Oral Cigarettes, is a song about the fear of vulnerability and exposure that stems from one's twisted sense of pride and vanity. The opening lyrics speak of the limited things one can do, and how one should just focus on doing other things instead. However, as the song progresses, the lyrics reveal that the singer is afraid of showing his weaknesses, his fear of being judged, and his obsession with maintaining a façade of strength and invincibility. He talks about his inflated ego and how he constantly seeks justification for his actions, even though he knows that he is just deluding himself. He longs for someone to call his name and hold his hand, but he also fears being seen as weak by others. In the end, he realizes that he can only move forward if he faces his fears head-on and accepts himself, weaknesses and all.

I love ecclesiastes. People always take ecclesiastes as being dark or sad...
- I think it's liberating.
It puts your mind off of the world and onto Christ.

I love Ecclesiastes. It's like it's just saying "Get over yourself bro, live your life and stop waiting to live"

@as-above-so-below-

@@ChapelonTheHill Obviously God. The whole point is to get you to get over yourself and your own perceived self importance in the world. That's where God comes in and your self loathing and/or arrogance dies.

@@ChapelonTheHill Don't take my answer as harsh or anything. I just don't know if your question was a set up or a teaching point

@@ChapelonTheHill If tradition is true and Solomon wrote this book towards the very end of his life, I would think that it was cathartic for him. I'm almost certain that his past conduct with the Bathsheba was eating him to the bone and this book is really a narration of his penitence for putting vanity and earthly things before God

**Bathsheba, not Queen of Sheba

@@ChapelonTheHill I think what he was going for most here is that our fears and insecurities are where most of our poor conduct and sin are rooted in. To let go of them and live a meaningful life, rather than a life searching for meaning in vanity is to let go of a lot of strong emotions that make living righteously difficult

The way "Then the devil left Him" is added brings me so much joy everytime I reach the end of the video. It's like a confirmation that regardless of what's happening, as long as we keep our faith in Christ, the devil shall be ashamed and scared by us, leaving us. The confirmation that in the end, we will win in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. May God bless you all!

Thanks, I needed to remember this. I had a very tough year when it came to fighting against sin. Thank you, brother in Christ.

Please don’t stop making stuff like these, you’re bringing back my relationship with God
