Understand
Varela Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Understand how I feel
Understand the way things are

cll my memories I've left behind
Though some are near and some are far

In looking back all I've known
Is crying tears and bearing pain

Now it's me and tomorrow holding hands
For yesterday was filled with rain

Understand how I feel
Understand the way things are

Ooo, Ooo, Ooo
Ooo, Ooo, Ooo
Ooo, Ooo, Ooo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Varela's song "Understand" convey a deep sense of longing and introspection. The singer pleads for someone to understand their emotions and the way things are in their life. The opening lines, "Understand how I feel, understand the way things are," express a desperate desire for empathy and comprehension from another person.

The following lines, "Call my memories I've left behind, though some are near and some are far," suggest a willingness to confront the past and the emotional baggage associated with it. The singer acknowledges that they have left behind certain memories, both close and distant, but they still carry them with them.

The next set of lyrics, "In looking back all I've known is crying tears and bearing pain, now it's me and tomorrow holding hands, for yesterday was filled with rain," convey a sense of transformation and hope. The singer reflects on a past filled with sorrow and anguish, but now they have embraced a new perspective. They are determined to move forward, hand in hand with tomorrow, leaving the rainy yesterdays behind.

Lyrics

lyrics
A word says nothing.
And at the same time it hides everything.
Like the wind that hides the water.
Like the flowers that hides the mud.

A look says nothing
And at the same time says it all
Like the rain on your face
Or some old treasure map
Like the rain upon your face
Or some old treasure map

A truth says nothing
And at the same time hides everything
Like a fire that doesn't go out
Like a stone that is born dust

If one day you miss me I will be nothing
And at the same time I will be everything
Because in your eyes are my wings
And there is the shore where I drown
Because in your eyes are my wings
And there is the shore where I drown

una palabra - one word
One word doesn't say anything
and at the same time it hides everything
like the wind that hides the water
Like the flowers that hide the mud.

A glance doesn't say anything
and at the same time says everything
like the rain on your face
or an old treasure map.

A truth doesn't say anything
and at the same time it hides everything
like a bonfire that won't go out
like a stone that gives birth to dust.

If one day I don't have you I will be nothing
and at the same time I will be everything
because in your eyes are my wings
and the shore where I drown,
because in your eyes are my wings
and the shore where I drown.

Same!! Watched Man on fire before I joined the Military. Seeing him fight with PTSD and Suicidal ideation hit me this last time watching it. I'm in tears thinking of the many who took their lives. The ones I've known to do the same. This song hits me in the feels.

Just finished watching Man on fire for the 100th time and this song made me cry not just because of the movie but because it reminded me of my Sister that passed away over a month ago❤😢

Understanding the words makes me appreciate what a beautiful poem taken from life this is,but sung in Spanish the words flow together better than any Contemporary song I have heard. An ethereal feeling to the song.

It does make you appreciate a beautiful poem & it wouldn’t be the same if it was sung in English. Thank God I’m bilingual!!! It makes me tear up every time I hear it!!!!

I remember watching the movie and this is the song that stuck in my head, I found it beautiful and haunting at the same time. Awesome song!
