The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

I'm gonna do you a little boogie on this here piano
Doing mighty fine, I'm gonna make you shake it
I'll make you do it, and make you do it, until you break it
It's called the Lewis boogie, in the Lewis way
Lord, I do my little boogie woogie every day
Well, down in New Orleans, the land of dreams
The cats go wild, do a boogie that's hot
My boogie woogie makes you want to stop and do the bop
It's called the Lewis boogie, in the Lewis way
Lord, I do my little boogie woogie every day
Well, now let's cruise on down to old Memphis town
That's where that Presley boy said you ain't nothing but a hound
But now you take my boogie, it keeps you in the groove
Then your sacroiliac begins to shiver and a move
It's called the Lewis boogie, in the Lewis way
Lord, I do my little boogie woogie every day
Oh, boogie woogie
When your hips start rockin'
And your knees start knockin'
Lewis boogie, Lewis way
Lord, I do my little boogie woogie every day
The lyrics to "Boogie the Blues" by Jerry Lee Lewis are a classic example of the boogie woogie style of piano playing that emerged in the early 20th century. Jerry Lee Lewis, a renowned pianist from Louisiana, lays out the foundation of the song through his opening lines. The song is all about getting people to dance and move to the rhythm of his boogie woogie piano playing.
Lewis references his Louisiana roots, the birthplace of jazz music, and later pays homage to the city of New Orleans, which he calls the land of dreams. He sings of the wild cats who do a boogie that's hot, and promises his own boogie woogie will make you want to stop and do the bop. Lewis then moves on to Memphis, Tennessee, often called the birthplace of rock and roll, where he takes a dig at Elvis Presley by referencing the "hound dog" insult that has been famously attributed to him, but quickly moves on to the main point - how his boogie woogie keeps you in the groove and makes your sacroiliac shiver and move.
Jerry Lee Lewis's lyrics in "Boogie the Blues" are simple yet effective. The energy he exudes in his voice and piano playing is infectious, and the song is a classic example of the boogie woogie style that influenced subsequent generations of rock and roll musicians.
