The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

And we gone dance some more
You've got to
Keep up with the times
If you wanna be mine
So if you can do it
Let me know
Do it, do it, do it
Do it, do it, do it
I went to a hop the other night
(Other night, woo, other night)
The dance they were doing
Yeah, was out of sight
(Out of sight, woo, out of sight)
The way it looked
There was nothing to it
(Nothing to it, nothing to it
Nothing to it)
I knew right away
Even I could do it
(I could do it, I could do it
I could do it)
Do it, do it, do it
How do you do it
In a minute, I'll tell you
Get ready, I'm geting ready
(First step)
Put your left foot out
(Second step)
Put your right foot out
Real fast
(Third step)
Stick your right heel out
Bring it back
(Fourth step)
Stick your right toe out
Real fast
Do it, come on
Come on, come on.....
Do you (shake it, baby)
(Shake) want my love
(Want my love, want my love
Want my love)
Tell me, tell me, baby
Do you want my love
(Want my love, want my love
Want my love)
(Fifth step)
Make a turn to the right
Turn around
(Sixth step)
Put your hands in the air
Bring em down
(Seventh step)
Jump in, jump out
(Eighth step)
Turn around, do it again
Come on, come on
Come on, come on
Got on the floor
Started moving to and fro
(To and fro, to and fro)
That's when I knew
I had to do it some more
(Do it some more, do it some more
Do it some more)
Do it, do it, do it
Can you do it, do it, do it
Yeah, yeah
Can you do it, do it, do it
Tell me, baby
Can you do it, do it, do it
I wanna know
Can you do it, do it, do it
Yeah, yeah
Can you do it, do it, do it
Tell me, baby
Can you do it, do it, do it
I wanna know.....
The lyrics describe the dance trend of 1964 and how the singer is trying to keep up with it. The singer meets someone they are interested in and challenges them to show off their dance moves. The song is all about having fun and showing off on the dancefloor.
The song was written and performed by Rufus Thomas, an American rhythm and blues, funk, and soul singer-songwriter, who was known as "The World's Oldest Teenager". It was released in 1964 and became a hit, reaching number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
