The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Various Artists Lyrics

I spent them waiting here for you.
Now your charity's refused,
I can name a penance for abuse.
Twenty four years overdue,
what kind of role model are you?
Very least learn not to do,
Do hope I won't
Learn to make
The same mistakes,
That you would
Make me aware
That only fear,
My only hope,
Is letting go.
Went on a limb for you,
Capsized when I turned twenty two.
Did it burn as bad for you?
No bottle serves to soothe my wounds.
Do hope I won't
Learn to make
The same mistakes,
That you would
Make me aware
That only fear,
My only hope,
Is letting go.
My only hope
Is letting go.
You're a few years overdue.
I spent them waiting here for you
To the tune of a fast-paced disco beat, the first verse of these lyrics chronicles the bitterness of a scorned lover who has been waiting for their former partner for years. The recipient is called out for their lack of charity and a penance is demanded for the perceived wrongs done to the singer. The second verse accuses the ex-lover of being a poor role model, twenty-four years too late to remedy their mistakes. The chorus focuses on letting go of the past's mistakes instead of dwelling on them, lest they be repeated.
For an artist like Madonna, famous for her pop anthems, these lyrics could be sung with a powerful voice that is both sultry and accusatory, a bit of a departure from the typically upbeat nature of her songs. For someone like Beyonce, they might be sung with a more tender, introspective voice, highlighting the pain of betrayal and the heartache of waiting so long for an apology that never comes. For a group like ABBA, the lyrics could be transformed into a catchy, disco-style dance floor hit that encourages listeners to let go of their own past mistakes and focus on moving forward.
