The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Love's last episode
There's nowhere to go, no no
You made your choice
And now it's up to me
To bow out gracefully
Though you hold the key, but baby
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be around
I knew just what to say
And now I found out today
All the words had slipped away, well I know
There's always a chance
A tiny spark will remain, yeah
And sparks turn into flames
And love can burn once again, well I know you know
Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Whenever you need me, I'll be there
I'll be around, yeah
Whenever you call me, I'll be there
Whenever you want me, I'll be there
Even if I have to crawl, I'll be there
I'll be around
Just call me on the phone, I'll be there
I'll never leave you alone, I'll be there
Just call out my name, I know I know you know
I'll be around
I'll be skipping and a jumping, I'll be there
I'll be ripping and running, I'll be there
Just call out my name I know you know
I'll be around
The lyrics of "Can I Be" by Various Artists imply a story of a failed relationship. The singer says that they have reached the end of the road in their love story, and their partner has made a choice to leave. The singer has no other option but to accept the decision gracefully, although they still feel like holding onto their love. The chorus of the song is an assurance of the love that the singer has for their ex-partner. They affirm that whenever the other person needs them, they will be there, even if it means crawling back to them. The singer hopes that the remaining sparks of their love will reignite, and they will be able to rekindle the flame of their love once again.
The lyrics touch on the universal theme of love and heartbreak, which many people can relate to. The words of the song reinforce the idea that even after a relationship has ended, true love never really dies. The singer's willingness to be there for their ex-partner, even if it means crawling back to them, reveals the depth of their feelings for the other person. The song's imagery of "sparks turning into flames" implies that love can be rekindled, and there is always hope for a second chance.
