The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Play "Just Walking In The…"
Just walking in the rain
Getting soaking wet
Torturing my heart
By trying to forget
Just walking in the rain
All because my heart
Still remembers you
People come to windows
They always stare at me
Shaking their heads in sorrow
Saying, who can that fool be
Just walking in the rain
Thinking how we met
Knowing things could change
Somehow I can't forget
(Just walking in the rain)
(Walking in the rain)
(Walking in the rain)
(Just walking in the rain)
(All day I ...)
People come to their windows
They always stare at me
Their shaking their heads in sorrow
Saying, who can that fool be
(Now who can he be)
Just walking in the rain
(Walking in the rain)
Thinking how we met
(Walking in the rain)
Knowing things could change
(Walking in the rain)
Somehow I can't forget
(Walking in the rain ...)
The song "Just Walking in the Rain" by Johnnie Ray is a heart-wrenching ballad that describes the pain of trying to forget a past love. The singer is walking alone in the rain, getting soaking wet, and torturing his heart by trying to forget. The rain is a metaphor for his emotions, as he is feeling alone and blue. Despite trying to move on, his heart still remembers his lost love. As he walks, people come to their windows and stare at him, shaking their heads in sorrow, wondering who this fool could be. He continues to walk and think about how he met his love, knowing that things could change, but somehow he can't forget.
The lyrics of this song are filled with raw emotion, and Johnnie Ray's powerful vocals add to the intensity of the song. The rain in the song is a symbol of the singer's sadness and despair, and his inability to forget his lost love. The song struck a chord with audiences when it was released in 1956 and quickly became a hit, reaching number two on the charts.
