The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

To the song here in my heart
A melody I've start
But can't complete
Listen, to the sound from deep within
It's only beginning
To find release
Oh,
the time has come
for my dreams to be heard
They will not be pushed aside and turned
Into your own
all cause you won't
Listen...
Listen,
I am alone at a crossroads
I'm not at home, in my own home
And I tried and tried
To say whats on my mind
You should have known
Oh,
Now I'm done believin you
You don't know what I'm feelin
I'm more than what, you made of me
I followed the voice
you gave to me
But now I gotta find, my own.
You should have listened
There is someone here inside
Someone I'd thought had died
Sooo long ago
Ohh I'm free now and my dreams to be heard
They will not be pushed aside on words
Into your arms
All cause you won't
Listen...
I don't know where I belong
But I'll be movin on
If you don't...
If you won't...
LISTEN!!!...
To the song here in my heart
A melody I've start
But I will complete
Oh,
Now I'm done believin you
You don't know what I'm feelin
I'm more than what, you made of me
I followed the voice, you think you gave to me
But now I gotta find, my own.

The song “Listen” by Various Artists was written for the 2006 musical film, “Dreamgirls”. The ballad is sung by Beyoncé’s character, Deena Jones, and is a defiant plea for her voice to be heard. The song is about empowerment, finding one’s own voice, and not letting others dictate their dreams or aspirations.
In the first verse, she sings about a melody that she has started, but can’t complete. This could be a metaphor for her struggle to find her own voice, as she is constantly overshadowed by her group mate, Effie, who is a much stronger and more powerful singer. In the second verse, she talks about feeling alone at a crossroads and not being able to express her true feelings. She also references the fact that she has followed someone else’s voice and now must find her own.
The chorus repeatedly asks the listener to “listen” to the song in her heart, to the sound from deep within, and to the fact that her dreams must be heard. The final verse is a message of empowerment, as she announces that she will be moving on and finding her own path in life. She is no longer willing to be someone else’s puppet and is determined to make her voice heard.
Overall, “Listen” is a powerful anthem about the importance of finding your own voice and not letting others dictate your dreams. It’s a song that has resonated with many people and has become an empowering ballad for those who feel like they are not being heard.
