The term Various Artists is used in the record industry when numerous singers and musicians collaborate on a song or collection of songs. Most often on Last.fm, compilation album tracks appear under the name of Various Artists erroneously because the individual artist is not listed in the album's ID3 information.
Compilation albums, for example.
Sometimes, single releases may be credited to Various Artists when their profits are going to charity and, usually in high-profile cases, are sometimes known by a group name. Examples include Band Aid with their releases of Do They Know It's Christmas? and USA for Africa with We Are The World.
Various Artists is also an actual performance name for Torsten Pröfrock, who runs the German DIN label. Torsten performs also as Dynamo, Erosion, Resilent, Traktor besides some others. He's a good friend of Robert Henke and since the Fall of 2004, he is a member of Monolake.
Various Artists was also a short-lived Bristol punk band formed by brothers Jonjo and Robin Key (originally from Birmingham). Other members were also simultaneously in Art Objects who went on to become The Blue Aeroplanes, the latter the Key brothers also co-wrote some songs and were involved in. When Various Artists imploded, the Key brothers went on to form Either / Or.
Various Artists also appear on tracks from musical theater soundtracks, due to the nature of having many cast members on one song, as well as an ensemble in some cases.

Where I go, when I go there
No more memory anymore
Only men on distant ships
The women with them, swimming with them, to shore
[MORITZ]
Where I go, when I go there
Only hymns upon your lips
A mystic wisdom, rising with them, to shore
[ERNST]
Touch me – just like that
And that – o, yeah – now, that's heaven
Now, that I like
God, that's so nice
Now lower down, where the figs lie
[MORITZ] (Spoken)
Still, you must admit
With the two anatomies
It truly is daunting
I mean, how do I know if I…
[MELCHIOR] (Spoken)
Measure up?
[MORITZ] (Spoken)
Not that I'm saying I wouldn't
I wouldn't want to not
Wouldn't ever not want to…
[MELCHIOR] (Spoken)
Moritz!
[MORITZ] (Spoken)
I have to go!
[MELCHIOR] (Spoken)
Moritz! Wait!
[OTTO]
Where I go, when I go there
No more shadows anymore
Only men with golden fins
The rhythm in them, rocking with them, to shore
[GEORG]
Where I go, when I go there
No more weeping anymore
Only in and out your lips
The broken wishes, washing with them, to shore
[ALL]
Touch me – all silent
Tell me – please – all is forgiven
Consume my wine
Consume my mind
I'll tell you how, how the winds sigh
Touch me – just try it
Now, there – that's it – God, that's heaven
I'll love your light
I'll love you right
We'll wander down where the sins cry
Touch me – just like that
Now lower down, where the sins lie
Love me – just for a bit
We'll wander down, where's the winds sigh
Where the winds sigh
Where the winds sigh
The lyrics to “Touch Me” are imbued with a sense of longing and a desire to escape to a place where everything feels new and where the past can be left behind. The first two verses, sung respectively by Melchior and Moritz, describe a place where they can start anew, leaving behind their painful memories and regrets. Ernst’s verse is more sensual, talking about the pleasures of touch, while Otto’s verse describes a place where everything is peaceful and serene, free from pain and sorrow. Finally, Georg’s verse is about finding solace in the arms of a loved one, and letting go of all the broken wishes and tears.
The chorus is a plea for comfort and forgiveness, with the repeated refrain of “Touch me” representing a desire for intimacy and connection. The line “We'll wander down where the sins cry” further highlights a desire to escape from the pressures and expectations of society, and to find solace in the arms of a lover.
The spoken interlude between Melchior and Moritz is a humorous moment in the song, with Moritz expressing anxiety about his sexual performance and Melchior trying to calm him down. This interlude adds a playful and relatable element to the song, which can be seen as a reflection of the struggles and uncertainties of adolescence.
