Misery
Varley Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sleepless,
Sleepless nights when I’m thinking bout you
Where you came from,
What you do,
How come you’re here?
Now every time I’m alone well I started
Thinking about the way that we parted
Don’t blame me now
For building all your misery
You have yourself
Don’t blame me now
For building all your misery
You have yourself
Oh yourself to blame

Speechless
Speechless when I’m talking to you
Your self-absorption rate’s
Way off the Richter scale
You can’t even ask: how are you?
Now every time I’m alone well I started
Thinking about the way that we parted

Don’t blame me now
For building all your misery
You have yourself
Don’t blame me now
For building all your misery
You have yourself
Oh yourself to blame

Now every time I’m alone well I started
Thinking about the way that we parted

Don’t blame me now
For building all your misery
You have yourself
Don’t blame me now
For building all your misery

You have yourself
Oh yourself to blame

Overall Meaning

The song "Misery" by Varley is a piece about a failed relationship and the aftermath of it. The chorus is especially significant, with the repetition of the lines "Don't blame me now for building all your misery, you have yourself, Oh, yourself to blame." The singer seems to be delivering a message to the former partner that they should take responsibility for their own misery, instead of blaming the singer for it.

The first verse of the song seems to be from the perspective of the singer having sleepless nights, thinking about the former partner and wondering where they came from and what they do. The chorus comes in and reiterates the point that the former partner's misery is of their own doing. The second verse of the song is reflective of the former partner's self-absorption and inability to ask the singer how they are doing, which eventually leads to the breakup. The song comes full circle with a repetition of the chorus and a final reminder to the former partner to take responsibility for their own happiness.
