I liked this version the best when it came out. But then I heard Bill Black and liked that one. And then I finally heard Bill Justis and that's the one! It's got this great combination of instrument sounds and a very unusual beat/rhythm structure.

Aah, the good old days of instrumentals. They were big back then.

On this day in 1957 {December 8th} the AM radio airwaves must have been flooded with "Raunchy"...
For on Billboard's Most Played by Jockeys chart for Dec. 8th, 1957 there were three versions of "Raunchy" in the Top 10, Bill Justis was at #6 with his version, one position lower at #7 was Ernie Freeman's version, and right at #10 was Bill Vaughn's version...
In addition, on Billboard's R&B Best-Sellers in Stores chart, Ernie Freeman's "Raunchy" was at #2 while Bill Justis was at #3, and the #1 record was "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke...
And on January 5th, 1958 Bill Justis' "Raunchy" replaced Ernie Freeman's version at #1 on Billboard's R&B Most Played by Jockeys chart...

This was the recording of Raunchy that I remember. I first Billy Vaughn record I bought was the EP edition of Sail Along Silv'ry Moon and of course Raunchy was included.

In-between playing musical notes, Justis drank. A lot.
The Sam Phillips/Jack Clement production of the ORIGINAL VERSION of Raunchy really should have been credited to Roland Janes and Sid Nanker.
Both are the lead forces on the record. Bill Justis was nominally the bandleader.......
I believe it was recorded at the original Sun studio as Sam Phillips Recording located around the corner didn't open until 1958.
