If I Were Your Woman
Vermettya Royster Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I were your woman and you were my man,
you'd have no other woman, you'd be weak as a lamb.
If you had the strength to walk out that door,
My love would over rule my sense, and I'd call you back for more,
If I were your woman.
If I were your woman, and you were my man. Um baby.

She tears you down darlin', says you're nothing at all.
But, I'll pick you up darling, when she lets you fall.
You're like a diamond but she treats you like glass.
Yet you beg her to love you, but, me you don't ask.
If I were your woman, If I were your woman.
If I were your woman, here's what I'd do,
I'd never, no, no, stop loving you.
Yeah, yeah, um

Life is so crazy, a love is unkind.
Because she came first, darling, will she hang on your mind?
You're a part of me, and you don't even know it.
I'm what you need, but I'm too afraid to show it.
If I were your woman, If I were your woman,
If I were your woman, here's what I'd do.
Never, no, no, no, stop loving you, ah, yeah.

If I were your woman, here's what I'd do.
Never, never stop loving you if

Overall Meaning

I Were Your Woman by Vermettya Royster is a powerhouse ballad that speaks to the complexities of love and the strength that comes with being a woman who loves. The lyrics describe a scenario where the singer is deeply in love with a man who is already in a relationship with another woman. Despite this, she professes a love so strong that if the man were under her care, she would make sure he never looked elsewhere for love. In the first verse, the singer says that if she were his woman, he would not have eyes for any other woman, such is the depth of her love. In the second verse, she speaks to how the man is treated by his current partner, who puts him down and treats him like he is nothing. She promises that if she had him, he would be treated like the precious gem he is, and she would never stop loving him. The final verse touches on the fear the singer has of expressing her love for the man. She believes that he is a part of her, but he doesn't know it, and she's too afraid to show it.

Ms Vermettya had to be one of the most criminally underrated vocalists of 20th century. Won’t speculate why, however, notice both she and Gladys shared versions of powerful compositions, this and “And this is Love”. Two of the few times (if ever) Gladys placed 2nd by this dynamic, electrifying female David Ruffin on steroids. Magnificent.
