Cock of Nothing
Veruca Salt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hold me up, I cannot stand
I am nothing, I'm your man
You have ??, I know you can
I will know that I'm your man

Hold me up, I'll hold you down
And you'll be thankful you have found a man
Like me

If I'm bad, you'll smack my hand
Little baby, little man
Forty pounder in the sand
Cock of nothing, I'm your man

Hold me up, I'll hold you down
And you'll be thankful you have found a man
Like me

Oh no, here I go
See, I can't connect if I can't control
And I (Oh no) see, I can't release if I can't let go
And I can't let you go, whoa

Hold me up, I'll hold you down
And you'll be thankful you have found a man
Like me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Cock of Nothing" by Veruca Salt showcases the singer's relationship with their partner and how they feel inadequate. The song starts with the first-person narrator admitting their vulnerability and the dependency they have on their partner to hold them up. They feel like they are nothing but their partner's "man." They seek comfort and security in their partner's arms, believing that their partner has the power to lift them up.

The second stanza of the song is where the singer switches the roles and promises to hold their partner down, reassuring them that they have found the right man. The line, "if I'm bad, you'll smack my hand" shows the dynamic of power in the relationship. The reference to "forty pounder in the sand" could be interpreted as a metaphor for being stuck in a difficult situation, and the singer's belief that they are strong enough to handle it.

In the chorus, the singer repeats the phrase "hold me up, I'll hold you down," trying to convince their partner that they are the perfect match. However, towards the end of the song, the singer realizes their inability to let go and surrender control, fearing losing their partner. The line "See, I can't connect if I can't control" highlights the singer's insecurity and vulnerability. They don't want to lose what they hold onto so tightly.

Overall, the lyrics of "Cock of Nothing" showcase the power dynamic and insecurities in a relationship, with the singer's constant need for their partner's validation and protection.

Veruca Salt had AWESOME B Sides that were often as good as the album tracks

Venus Axe

Truly!! This is my first time hearing this one but damn! It's freaking awesome! I wonder about the songs that didn't get recorded.

IceWater Productions

Yeah they do. All the cd, 7, 10, and 12 inch singles from the early days are incredible. Even later rare 10 inch and a tour 7 inch add up to another albums worth of ripping tunes.

Blake S

One of my favorite VS songs ever. Love it.

M Loftin

I would love to see VS record in 2021 an EP with this song, about three other rare demos like Time, and a new song (maybe the one Louise wrote recently). Then start touring in the winter. Do it. I dare them.

Mick Pig

EXCELLENT SONG!!!! Some VS B-Sides are better than album tracks, Thank you for the upload!!!!! :-)

Mick Pig Agreed. The one thing that makes me sad is that so many people that might have casually listened to them or might have only been into their studio albums missed out on some great tracks.

miked4309

she's a brain and sundown are great tracks. love veruca. they need a rarities/b-sides album for sure.

Venus Axe

@miked4309 she's a brain and sundown are two of my favourites! Underrated tracks and I include this one. Along with Pale Green. I think some people sleep on sundown and I hate that.
