Sundown
Veruca Salt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

you're the pearl in the quicksand
you sink without a sound
i'm the girl with the tiny hands
planted underground
you're the dream, i'm the dreamer
in the dream, you're still around
see the sun falling down (x4)
you're the bleach
when everything went black
the relief i found
you're the sliver of hope in my lap
you're soft, warm, round
see the sun falling down (x4)
falling down (x2)
goodnight moon, goodnight mush
goodnight ladies saying hush
goodnight moon, goodnight mush

goodnight ladies saying hush
see the sun falling down (x6)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Veruca Salt's song "Sundown" can be interpreted in various ways. The song seems to be about a relationship where one person is struggling and sinking in life, while the other person is a source of comfort and hope. The first line, "you're the pearl in the quicksand," can be seen as a metaphor for someone who is valuable and precious but also stuck and struggling. The second line, "you sink without a sound," can be interpreted as someone who is silently struggling and drowning in their problems.

The next lines shift the perspective to the other person in the relationship, "i'm the girl with the tiny hands planted underground." This can be seen as someone who is trying their best to help, but feels insignificant and powerless in the face of the other person's struggles. They feel like they are unable to fully get through to the other person, and perhaps also feel stuck themselves.

The chorus then repeats the line "see the sun falling down" four times, which can represent the decline of hope and optimism. The next few lines continue to describe the other person as a source of light and relief in dark times. The repeated line "goodnight moon, goodnight mush, goodnight ladies saying hush" can be seen as a lullaby, providing comfort and closure for the listener. The song ends with a final repetition of "see the sun falling down," emphasizing the feeling of impending darkness.

I pretty much won't even call myself a "Fan" these days if I don't know the B-sides and like everything they've ever done.  Maybe it's just because I used to stay online and chat for hours in like 1999 and Download Garbage B-sides from Every god damn directions research the bands find the Lineups find what the lead singers think about their biographies i've made fan apperication web pages for celebrities I at the time was teetering on being obsessed with and Waver in and out of obsessive cycles no matter how "peaceful" of an individual I am but I pretty much have become a nazi about what i mean when I say i'm a "fan" of something. I'm a "fan" of Garbage and Everclear. I "Listen to" and "Like" Nearly everything.
#Overlyobsessedfansaretheonlyrealfansthatthereare.

but yeah to this day I would probably buy Garbage Bootlegs if i found them. especially if they had live performances of one of the B-sides.

I don’t know, the internet made me prettty relucant to call myself a “fan” unless i was a completionist nutjob about something.

i feel all humbled wheneer someone is “into” something because i’m all like Nah I won’t… I feel bad pretending I like it because I’m not certain I’m as into is as you are and until I am I’m just gonna feel all bawkwardd and pretentious trying to be like Oh yah I like them too.
