Independence Day
Vic Chesnutt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well future stepped into my field and turned it into an empire
Forefathers where are you now?
Your dust is settling on my furniture

Oh independence day, I never knew it would be so symbolic.
Oh independence day.

Well I stepped out of a cloud and the ditch it is close
I mean the ditch it is closing in.
Hemingway did yourself justice
So here's to you you articulate dead fisherman

Independence day, I never knew it would be so symbolic.
Independence day.
Independence day, I never knew it would be so symbolic.
Independence day.

What if I said I loved you
And I needed your guidance to help me through the obstacles?
Would you say I am too wordy and then, then would you laugh?
What if I said I'm under glass untouchable as the document itself?
Would you say ok,
And that you never even considered me?

Oh independence day, yes Independence,
Independence day, independence,
Independence day, day,

Independence day, I never knew it would be so symbolic.

Overall Meaning

The song Independence Day by Vic Chesnutt reflects a sense of nostalgia and longing for the past while also exploring the complexities of personal independence. Chesnutt begins by acknowledging that his present state, created by the future, has resulted in a new world order and an empire which was once his field. He then questions his forefathers, wondering where they are now as their dust is settling on his furniture. He seems to be grappling with a sense of disconnect with his past and the changing world around him. This theme is further explored with Chesnutt's reference to Hemingway, a symbol of the past whose legacy has remained, and who he pays tribute to in this song.

@Msbookie: I'd like to update the cause of death unofficially as "tired of fuckin' with life". I have the upmost respect for Vic and his fans, he is a testament for how much feeling an artist should put forth in their work. This video makes me sad, but the work as a whole shows his humanity and a path in life that is largely unselfish,. I wish more people could put them selves out there the way he has.
