Varpunen jouluaamuna
Viikate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lumi on jo peittänyt kukat laaksosessa,
Järven aalto jäätynyt talvipakkasessa.
Varpunen pienoinen, syönyt kesäeinehen,
Järven aalto jäätynyt talvi pakkasessa.

Pienen pirtin portailla oli tyttökulta:
Tule, varpu, riemulla, ota siemen multa!
Joulu on, koditon varpuseni onneton,
Tule tänne riemulla, ota siemen multa!

Tytön luo nyt riemuiten lensi varpukulta:
Kiitollisna siemenen otan kyllä sulta.
Palkita Jumala tahtoo kerran sinua.
Kiitollisna siemenen otan kyllä sulta!

En mä ole, lapseni, lintu tästä maasta,
Olen pieni veljesi, tulin taivahasta.
Siemenen pienoisen, jonka annoit köyhällen,
Pieni sai sun veljesi enkeleitten maasta.

Siemenen pienoisen, jonka annoit köyhällen,
Pieni sai sun veljesi enkeleitten maasta.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Viikate’s song “Varpunen jouluaamuna” describes the winter season and the story follows a small bird called Varpunen, as she navigates the harsh environment. The first verse describes the winter scenery, with the flowers already covered by snow and the lake’s water frozen from the cold. Meanwhile, the small bird, Varpunen has only eaten summer food, an indication of her struggle to sustain herself during this cold season.

In the second verse, we learn about a young girl who offers Varpunen some seeds to eat. The girl seems to be kind-hearted, offering food to the homeless bird when everyone else has left her to struggle alone. The bird accepts the seeds gratefully, promising to repay her someday when she is rewarded by God.

The final verse reveals a twist in the story as the bird speaks and identifies herself as the young girl's brother, who has come down from heaven to repay her kindness. The little seed that the girl gave to the bird has germinated in heaven, and the girl's brother, now grown into an angel, brings the gift of life to his sister to show his gratitude for her kindness to an apparent stranger.

Overall, the song is a heartwarming tale of kindness, empathy, and gratitude, which is especially fitting for the holiday season.
