Faces
Vincent Radio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sittin' here at this party
People look at my face
So I'm a little bit startled
Why am I so out of place
If I could just get some comfort
Some peace and quiet today
And hope I can find someone
Who feels this way
I was walking the hallways
I swear I saw you today
But I didn't say anything
I just went on with my day

Too many faces
Too many places
Too many names to know

So let's make our own twin fantasy
Like Roberto did with that kid from Archie
And hopefully we make it on TV
Hopefully we make it to our season 3
Well oh no
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no

Well I try to go out
Try to stay fill
Try to stay sober
And try all of it
But I'm done trying
But I'm done trying

Well I try to go out
Try to stay fill
Try to stay sober
And try all of it
But I'm done trying
But I'm done trying
But I'm done trying
But I'm done trying

So let's make our own twin fantasy
Like Roberto did with that kid from Archie
And hopefully we make it on TV
Hopefully we make it to our season 3
Well oh no
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no

Too many faces
Too many places
Too many names to know

Too many faces
Too many places
Too many names to know

Too many faces
Too many places
Too many names to know

So let's make our own twin fantasy
Like Roberto did with that kid from Archie
And hopefully we make it on TV
Hopefully we make it to our season 3
Well oh no
Oh no
Oh no
Oh no

Make our own twin fantasy
Like Roberto did with that kid from Archie
And hopefully we make it on TV
Hopefully we make it to our season 3
Too many faces
(Well oh no)
Too many places
(Oh no)
Too many names to know
(Oh no)
Too many faces
(Oh no)
Too many places
Too many names to know

Too many faces
Too many places
Too many names to know

Too many faces
Too many places
Too many names to know

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Vincent Radio's song "Faces" delve into the feelings of alienation and disconnect that often accompany social gatherings. The singer describes their discomfort at a party where they feel out of place, surrounded by unfamiliar faces and names. The chorus emphasizes the overwhelming nature of being in a crowded space filled with countless individuals, highlighting the struggle to navigate through a sea of faces and identities.

The mention of spotting someone familiar in the hallways but choosing not to engage with them further underscores a sense of isolation and missed connections. Despite the yearning for comfort and companionship, the singer finds themselves retreating into their own thoughts and anxieties, unable to break through the barriers that separate them from others.

As the lyrics progress, there is a shift towards a desire to create a personal 'twin fantasy', drawing inspiration from the fictional realm where the singer hopes to find a sense of belonging and recognition. This theme of seeking validation and fulfillment through external sources like television and the concept of a 'season 3' reflects a longing for validation and significance in a world that feels overwhelming and impersonal.

The repetition of the lines "But I'm done trying" suggests a resignation to the challenges of social interaction and the constant pressure to conform or fit in. The refrain of "Too many faces, too many places, too many names to know" encapsulates the overwhelming nature of navigating through the complexities of social relationships and the struggle to find one's place amidst the chaos.

In the closing lines, the repetition of the plea to create a 'twin fantasy' and the acknowledgment of the abundance of faces and places to navigate serve as a poignant reflection on the perpetual search for connection and understanding in a world filled with distractions and obstacles. The cryptic reversal of the final line ("Cire uoy kcuf") adds an enigmatic layer to the song, leaving the listener to ponder the deeper meanings and complexities hidden within the lyrics.

I was still a small kid that year, but my brother was a rabid fan of "Seymour" and talked my dad into taking us to see him that first year in "The John Wayne Theater" (He built a show around old B&W horror and sci-fi movie clips.) The event was a lot more 'kid-friendly' than its become over the years--they even had trick-or-treating locations throughout the park where kids could bring a punch card and get small prizes. I even remember the Log Ride was done up as "Satan's Sawmill" with the tagline "Satan's Waitin' ", and then just before midnight, in Calico Square they had a brilliant bit of street-theater called "The Midnight Hanging Of The Witches" where a 'witch' was dragged up to a scaffold there in the square and she "cursed" all the onlookers before turning into a dove and flying off before any actual 'lynching' took place. None of these things I think they could get away with in today's overly "PC" world, but they were AWESOME back then! (And for just $4.00? That too is mind-blowing!)

Gads! I loved watching Larry "Seymour" Vincent, back in the long-lost olden days. He was a must-see event during my high school years in So. Cal., and the weekend was never quite complete without an alleged Banjo Billy sighting, or an attempt (by Seymour) to finally crash that damn party, continually in progress (it seemed) across the street from his "Slimy Wall" / pay phone adorned abode. I always adored his lovable creepy curmudgeon routine. To have been playfully bad-mouthed by Seymour was viewed as something of an honor, I believe.

I never was one-the-ball or adventurous enough to catch any of his appearances at Knott's, but I quite luckily attended a one-night-only screening (at a walk-in theater on Ocean Blvd. in Long Beach -- the city of my dubious birth) of Vincent Price's "The Oblong Box". That is still truly a hallowed memory for me!

First, Seymour schmoozed his way into the venue, along the box office line of devoted fans, and later on, he performed his tried & true "phone gag", where he continually bad-mouthed ol' Vinnie for being (as he put it) "...nothing but a hack actor...", then miraculously, his prop telephone rang, and just as miraculously, it was supposed to have been Uncle Vinnie calling to complain about the way he was being so rudely maligned to the audience members, and Seymour sheepishly denies saying a single critical word against him.

Of course, how V.P. was supposed to have known, as this public appearance obviously wasn't being televised, is anyone's guess. He once did the same schtick on his show with some creaky old John Carradine movie, but Carradine ended up stepping out from the backdrop, after Seymour took up insulting his acting chops once again. Too funny!

Thanks, Reverend Dan. This was a wicked-great blast from the past. If you haven't already seen it, check out this old clunker of a movie. The high-points are (1) it stars Alvy Moore in an unlikely part, and (2) Larry Vincent makes a wordless cameo appearance as one of several witches / warlocks gathered for a Black Arts orgy of fun and mayhem.

How I wish Seymour would rise from the grave and be on TV again in Los Angeles. I miss him so.

For those of us who grew up in LA in the 60's & 70's, and had numerous, funny horror show hosts that played a wide variety of spooky films! Unfortunately in modern times we have only one: Svengoolie, who plays the same Universal "horse and buggie" movies over and over again till I wanna puke.
