No, didn't get your stupid letter
So, this is getting weird I better go
What of this helpless crazy talk
Enough of getting skinny
Doing lots of drugs
'Cause we've paid for our mistakes enough
Can we start over?
I wanna be new
If we could start over
I'd die into you
I promise to learn and to love what you give
If we could start over again
Trust that my heart has never hurt this much
'Cause I've never let it bleed enough
And I miss you, but I don't miss us
Oh...
Can we start over?
I wanna be new
If we could start over
I'd die into you
I promise to learn and to love what I give
If we could start over again, yeah
Hey, oh yeah
You're getting harder to remember
No, didn't get your stupid letter
So, this is getting weird I better go
Can we start over?
I wanna be new
If we could start over
I'd die into you
I promise to learn and to love what you give
If we could start over again
Can we start over?
I can't see your face
If we could start over
I'd try to behave
I live in a house
But without any doors
So can I come over to yours?
Behind every "yes" is a thousand "no's"
That's 999, only one more to go
Oh, one more to go
Oh, one more to go
Yeah...
In Virgil's song Amnesia, the lyrics convey a sense of regret and longing for a second chance. The opening lines, "You're getting harder to remember. No, didn't get your stupid letter. So, this is getting weird I better go." suggests that the relationship has faded away to the point where the singer is having trouble recalling the details. The mention of the "stupid letter" that was not received could signify a communication breakdown between the couple, which ultimately led to their separation.
The following lines, "What of this helpless crazy talk. Enough of getting skinny, doing lots of drugs 'cause we've paid for our mistakes enough" suggest that the couple went through a difficult time, possibly a period where they struggled with addiction or mental health issues. The lyrics can be interpreted as the singer wanting to start afresh and make amends for past mistakes. The lines "Can we start over? I wanna be new. If we could start over, I'd die into you. I promise to learn and to love what you give if we could start over again" express a desire to rebuild the relationship and take a new approach.
The chorus of the song, with the lines "Can we start over? I can't see your face. If we could start over, I'd try to behave. I live in a house, but without any doors. So, can I come over to yours?" reinforces the idea of wanting to repair the relationship. It suggests that the singer feels lost and disconnected from the world, which is symbolized by living in a house without any doors. The final lines of the song, "Behind every 'yes' is a thousand 'no's. That's 999, only one more to go. Oh, one more to go. Oh, one more to go. Yeah..." leaves the listener with a feeling of hopefulness; that even though the journey may be difficult, there is a possibility of finding happiness again.
