1) Virtue (Oxford, UK)

Virtue was a NWOBHM band formed in 1981. They released a 7" titled 'We Stand to Fight' in 1985 on Other Records. The 'Fool's Gold' demo was released independently by the band in 1987 on cassette tape when the originally planned vinyl EP failed to come to fruition due to financial issues and label complications.

The band's first demo Virtue-Defenders was released on tape in 1984: At that time the band consisted of the Sheldon brothers Matt and Tudor, Metcalfe, Reader and Lewington. As the result wasn't satisfying the band almost split-up. The lineup was almost completely revamped then, with the Sheldon brothers being the only remaining members.

What a beautiful video, thank you Fr. Mike. My concern, especially as someone who suffers with mental illness like depression and anxiety, is that through those illnesses I've become habitually timid, and small, and I don't know how to recognize any "gifts" within myself. How can someone like myself even begin to see those, so I can try and start to let them grow and work towards glorifying God?

Ask God in prayer to show you your gifts and ways you can use them, but don't be driven to think that they must be mighty talents or deeds. God can use a seed to grow a forest. So the generosity of spirit can just be dropping uplifting comments like this, sharing your knowledge, listening to someone and so on. For me, I think I'm gonna join lector or choir at my parish. I've been procrastinating a long time and it's a little way to use my gifts

Greetings Father Mike being educated thru a Catholic Faith got me thru some really challenging times as a minor child and thru my adult hood. I have always respected Priests and Nuns and admired their discipline and love for God. In a world of greed I seen and been thru alot growing up heard war stories seen soldiers depressed and the best advice I could give was to say a prayer everyday talk to God in private go to mass when feeling lonely. I respect commandments and laws. I respect people and that we are not made the same but with different cultures and skills. You are from my generation and enjoy hearing you explain the bible because some men don't have a clue. In the bible it does speak about a shepard that knows how to lead its sheep.

This was my biggest struggle as a Catholic. I used to believe that desiring and pursuing great things is a sin. They said Christian life is an adventure and so you must give up your desires and follow God's will always. But in effect, this made me feel stucked and depressed because I thought having a dream is sinful. "The world is bad" "give up all worldly desires" "happiness cannot be found in this life" mentality that so many Catholics possess is just negative and depressing. I suffered depression and anxiety because of that way of thinking. It felt like the only way to God is to enter a convent and pray all day while waiting for your death.

Thank God I stumbled upon the book, The Power of Positive Thinking. It was written by a Protestant Pastor Norman Vincent Peale and it helped me realize that God wants all of His children to be successful, to shine, to be excellent, and to be joyful in this life. Our Lord Jesus said He came so that we may have life and have it abundantly. Regardless of our circumstances, we should be happy and grateful for we know that God loves us, God is always with us, and God is in control. Knowing this truth made me feel more grateful, energized, and hopeful for the future. I want to thrive and be excellent so God will be proud of me and I will be capable to help others. I hope Catholics will put more emphasis on the Virtue of Magnanimity and cultivating a positive mindset.

Its says: our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frighten us. Why do humans have weaknesses? We can only do so much. Some people are naturally great at certain things. I definitely used to think being insecure was a sign of humility. Honest humility scares me. Having to be content with who you are is a very difficult task for some.

Fine :) Correction, I can do things. But this is just a work to be done, and my life is mostly about perception. I want to sit and think about different things, see and hear the world, and to "contemplate" if I could say that and be in stillness and silence, at least inner silence. And yes, I want to be small and unseen, not because of "pusillanimity", but because of the desire of loneliness of a certain kind and peace. I don't know what the advantage is from my personality for God. So, I feel like I'm slightly useless for Him, at least according to your terms, but I will do, what I can :)

@Kateřina Farlíková Then embrace weakness. I have many talents but I do not lean on them, they are limited, it is a harsh struggle to accept that and not be orideful. We must lean on God. Our power is meaningless unless it is aligned to God's Will anyway. Everything else will be wiped away. Only He and His Will are eternal. And He is the One Who decides if we enter Paradise and He is the One Who gives us what we need to be ready. Trying any other way is insanity and high foolishness.

@Kateřina Farlíková Oh yes I think I get it. Being humble is not in conflict with being magnanimous. If anything it is a pre-requisite. But we need to trust where the Lord wants us, and we need to know that He knows what is best for us and His plan is the right one for our lives.

@The Archivist I know I have all her letters. I don't contradict the whole message, but maybe the desire to be small and separated doesn't mean you can't be magnanimious in some way. Also, Teresie is the small-great soul and I am the small-small soul, I'm glad if I don't collapse and do some work :)

It was followed by two other black institutions--Lincoln University, in Pennsylvania (1854), and Wilberforce University, in Ohio (1856). Xavier Louisiana founded in 1925. Nice. I thought magnanimous was about forgiving but I like Father Mike's definition better. Likely both apply, to be bold in using your gifts for others while forgiving those that harmed you along the way. Thus forgiving & quitting is wrong, as is going forward in bitterness. Interesting.
