Devil's Advocate
Voices From The Fuselage Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

we will never see the truth if we're blinded by tears.
progressing in a state of duty lest we face our fears.
i am right-brained and of wrong-intent.
a leaf of a tree that's pent.
prying for my freedom, yet on my descent.

(growing)
have patience my solemn child.
hold steady, into the wild.

hands are pointing to thee.
(you will at last reign)
we're begging please.
(drowning in disdain)
this is not peace.
(i can't take this pain)
this will not cease
(until we're on our knees screaming)

our deity is you.

god bless us.
god keep us.
god save us this time.

hands are pointing to thee.
(you will at last reign)
we're begging please.
(drowning in disdain)
this is not peace.
(i can't take this pain)
this will not cease
(never)

we knew the world would not be the same.
few people laughed, few people cried, most people were silent.
i remembered the line from the hindu scripture, the bhagavad-gita:
vishnu is trying to persuade the prince that he should do his duty
and to impress him takes on his multi-armed form and says,
"now i am become death, the destroyer of worlds."

the world will not be the same

Overall Meaning

The song "Devil's Advocate" is a powerful reflection on the state of society and our individual struggles with our inner demons. The opening lines "we will never see the truth if we're blinded by tears. progressing in a state of duty lest we face our fears" express the idea that we can't truly see what's going on in the world if we are too emotional and afraid to face reality. The singer then declares that they are "right-brained and of wrong-intent," suggesting that they may struggle with negative thoughts or impulses. They compare themselves to a leaf that is trapped on a tree, prying for freedom but ultimately on a descent.

The chorus presents a desperate plea for salvation from a higher power: "god bless us. god keep us. god save us this time." Despite the singer's struggles, they appear to have faith in a divine force that can help them overcome their fears and doubts. The final lines of the song reference the infamous quote from J. Robert Oppenheimer after the first successful test of the atomic bomb: "now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds." This reference adds a layer of existential horror to the song, underscoring the idea that our individual struggles are dwarfed by larger, global issues like war, destruction, and the future of humanity.
