D.N.A
Voivod Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The rot set in, the rain came in
Searching for a new anaesthesia
Maybe it's time to throw in the towel
I bought the cow, you get the milk for free
Somebody down there likes me
I admit I'm a misfit, you agree, I submit
The night's decayed, the wind is hot
I was born in the USA, I'm deformed by my DNA
Fine example of this great nation
Shrine to humiliation
They said put yourself at my disposal
You'll accept our proposal
But I'm doomed to live
Somebody down there likes me
Cruelty can be unkind
You try to think things are going fine
Or it's a sign that you're going out of your mind
So you submit, so you submit
Don't no anything
I don't say no to anything
I admit I'm a misfit, I submit
Paint thinner & snake juice
It's water from the moon
It's the teardrops of the angels
The nectar of the gods
So so many injections
To handle each and every infection
So many subliminal suggestions
To the president of rejection, I submit
Cruelty can be unkind, drive you out of your mind
Or it's a sign that things are going fine
I admit I'm unfit, I submit
The DNA is DOA all across the USA
Ne sais rien, je ne dis non a rien
Does somebody out there like me?
Have a nice day...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Voivod's song D.N.A. suggest a sense of defeat, resignation and isolation. The rain, symbolizing hardship, has come in and the singer is searching for a new escape or "anaesthesia." The mention of throwing in the towel suggests a loss of hope, perhaps due to being born "deformed by my DNA," implying a sense of predetermined failure. The singer admits to being a "misfit," and agrees to submit to the cruelty of the situation. Despite the negativity, the line "somebody down there likes me" suggests a glimmer of hope or a sense that maybe things aren't as bad as they seem.

The song takes a bit of a surreal turn in the second half, mentioning odd substances such as paint thinner and snake juice, and referencing injections and subliminal suggestions. The singer admits to being unfit, but ultimately questions if somebody out there likes them. It's as if they are resigned to their fate, but still hold out some hope for connection or understanding. The line "ne sais rien, je ne dis non a rien" means "I know nothing, I say no to nothing," indicating a sense of surrender.

For those who don't know, the vocals on this song are by Jim Thirlwell. Jim is possibly best known for his recent work, composing music for the Venture Brothers on Adult Swim, but is probably most respected for his "Foetus" project - which, like Voivod, set him apart as the leader of his genre in the 80's. (Voivod in thrash metal, Foetus in industrial). These guys have known and respected each other for years and Snake's absence was a good opportunity for them to do a track together.

@PreacherNny

Langevin has also played with Thirlwell on several of his projects, such a strange crossover but I love it
