Volcano
Volcano Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let's get down off of this ride
I feel a little funny inside
This whole place is turning to shit
Let's slip off this ??
Let's get down off of this ride
I feel a little better inside
This whole place is turning to end
Dreams look a little better up there

Looks like it's about to blow sky-high
Volcano
Little bird's about to blow sky-high
Volcano

One more thing, another bad ride
Things look a little funny outside
Stone rock is turning to heat
Looks like we better get out of here
I'd push you but it won't go
Push my face right into the snow
Looking deep into your eye
Lava rock is starting to rise

Looks like it's about to blow sky-high
Volcano
Little bird's about to blow sky-high
Volcano

I'd push stone but I can't pass
Fall face down right into the trash
Looking deep into your eyes
Your whole heart is covered with ash
I'd push you but it won't go
Push my face right into the snow
Let's get down off of this ride
Things look a little funny outside

Looks like it's about to blow sky-high
Volcano
Little bird's about to blow sky-high
Volcano

Looks like it's about to blow sky-high
Volcano
Little bird's about to blow sky-high
Volcano

Volcano

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Volcano" by Damien Rice describe a sense of impending doom and urgency to escape. The song's metaphorical lyrics compare a troubled relationship to a volcano that is about to erupt. The singer expresses a desire for release from the emotional turmoil that they are experiencing, suggesting that staying in the relationship is akin to staying on an unstable volcano. The lyrics describe the symptoms of this instability, with the singer feeling "funny inside" and seeing that "things look a little funny outside". They also express a recognition that the situation is getting worse: "This whole place is turning to shit" and "Stone rock is turning to heat."

The chorus of the song emphasizes the sense of danger, with the repeated phrase "Looks like it's about to blow sky-high" and the metaphor of a little bird about to be crushed by the impending eruption. The bridge of the song shifts to a more personal experience, with the singer questioning their own ability to escape the situation by saying "I'd push you but it won't go" and "I can't push stone but I can't pass." The final lines of the song suggest that the singer and their partner may be able to find a better perspective if they can separate themselves from the turmoil and view it from a distance: "Dreams look a little better up there" and "Your whole heart is covered with ash."

I was in Iceland in September 2021 to see the volcano there. Unfortunately it had stopped erupting a while prior, but we still wanted to go and see it. Two days before we actually climbed it we were meant to do it, but due to storms we weren't able to. That same day lava started erupting out of the earth much further back from the volcano, which we were going to hike to.

We visited it eventually, but I was with my mum and she'd hurt her knee. I left her at this barrier they'd built to redirect the flow of the lava away from the town, as she couldn't go any further. I walked to the cone of the volcano, took a few pictures but decided against hiking all the way to where lava was shooting out of the earth as I didn't want to leave my mum too long on her own.

So, I turned back, and bam, a huge lava flow had started just south of the volcano. I didn't hear a thing, it was so quiet. But it moved so fast.

I took my photos and started back to my mum, who texted e saying they were being evacuated as the lava was coming to them. I said sure, meet you back at the car! But no, they closed off that path as there was a chance the lava would breach that barrier, so she was coming up. My mum was 62 with a bad leg, had to climb up the hill on her hands and knees (loose rocks and the incline).

Managed to meet each other at the top then make our way to the car. My mum was terrified... I was loving life. Finished the day at the Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik, where we watched tons of helicopters and planes departing for the volcano.

Absolutely crazy experience. Visit Iceland if you ever get the opportunity, you won't be disappointed!

Easy to see why some peoples believed in dragons being underground, the way these examples are huffing & puffing away whilst spewing lava bombs. Great vid, thanks!

@ruebensmith8931

It would be cool to see a dragon emerge from it..terrifying but cool

@joshuasmith6386

Dragons... wtf??? Lol for sure man. How nerdy are you. Bet you believe Harry potter is real too

@girlmadesunshine

I’ve actually never heard this belief until now.. cool!

@d3arb0rns

It's only like 3 people in the world who believes that, the rest of us are not so stupid

@mikecollon100

There is actually archaeological evidence of dragons in the past. Animals that large obviously go extinct after being hunted for centuries. Whether they actually breathed fire to the degree the movies show is another thing altogether.
