She appeared regularly in the television show Ally McBeal in which she played a resident performer at the bar where the show's characters drank after work. She plays piano, guitar, and bass.
Vonda Shepard was born in New York but her family relocated to California when she was fairly young. She played piano from an early age. Her father is Richmond Shepard, a mime and improv actor. Vonda has three sisters: Rosetta, Luana, and Brianna. Her mother left the family when Vonda was ten, and her father raised the four girls by himself.
After performing as a backing singer for many years she was eventually given her own recording contract. Shepard's first chart appearance was in 1987 when she recorded a duet with Dan Hill entitled 'Can't We Try'. She released her first self-titled album in 1989 with little fanfare. The album did yield one chart single, Don't Cry Ilene, a mid-tempo, piano-driven jazz-RnB flavored song dealing with the break-up of a relationship between a black woman and a white man, arising from adult peer pressure. The track is sung from the perspective of the woman's white female friend, who harbors a desire to have the man for herself, but keeps her distance out of respect for her friend. The song peaked at 17 on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart and stayed on the charts for 12 weeks.
After her third album, Shepard was signed up to appear on Ally McBeal after being spotted by the show's creator David E Kelley. While on the show she recorded two full soundtrack albums and was featured on two other Ally McBeal compilations. The songs Shepard recorded for Ally McBeal soundtrack albums were mainly covers of old songs with lyrics that paralleled what was happening in the title character's life onscreen. Since appearing in the show, Shepard has released two more studio albums and a live album.
Shepard is married to music producer Mitchell Froom and they had their first child, Jack Froom, on 15 April 2006.

Every Breath You Take
Vonda Shepard Lyrics
Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take, I'll be watching you
Every single day and every word you say
Every game you play, every night you stay, I'll be watching you
Oh, can't you see you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take
Every move you make, every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you
Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night, I can only see your face
I look around but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying, "Baby, baby, please"
Oh, can't you see you belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take
Every move you make and every vow you break
Every smile you fake, every claim you stake, I'll be watching you
Every move you make, every step you take, I'll be watching you
I'll be watching you
Every breath you take and every move you make
Every bond you break, every step you take (I'll be watching you)
Every single day and every word you say

He did this show when he was just out of prison and no one would hire him. This was the beginning of his arc of redemption. I have a ton of respect for the man. Literally from Best Actor Oscar nominee to rock bottom addict to the worlds best known working actor. He IS Ironman. Bravo, dude.
@LetsMars
I never knew Sting went to prison

Well said.

Actually he was written out because he relapsed and was arrested. But he did eventually get himself back on track, and I respect him immensely.

THIS IS INCORRECT. Originally Robert Downey Jr. was going to be "The One" that Ally finally falls in love with, etc. But during shooting, RDJ was arrested for drugs again.
Originally the television show appeared committed to working with him. After all, the troubled actor and the show had been good for each other: Downey won a Golden Globe, and the show got a boost in its then-sagging ratings.
When Downey was arrested, they had to suddenly cancel the scheduled Tuesday appearance in Los Angeles with singer Vonda Shepard to promote a soundtrack album from Ally McBeal. On the album, Downey does a duet with Sting of "Every Breath You Take." Downey also sings a song that he wrote called "Snakes." So he screwed the show and the Vonda Shepard album too.
Downey was arrested just when the season ending and last story arcs were about to be filmed. They couldn't film him as the hero they wanted to. Instead there is just a NOTE left on a Snowman because he "skipped town to Chicago" to shoot around RDJ's absence. They had to start up with an entirely different person to build up to the level they had intended for the Ally-RDJ storyline they wanted to make.
"He is ironman." -- Ironman was a rich ass who lived off the wealth his father's company created, always looking at "the little people who don't really matter" with contempt. That is Ironman's origin, and he always continues to have the "I know more than anyone around me" personality (that continues through all the Ironman movies). Not really the biggest stretch RDJ has had to do for a role.

Total respect for RDJ. He turned his life around and went on to be one of Hollywood's biggest stars.
@AccidentalPreppper
