It is THRILLING in the deepest sense of the word. A teenage Ingmar Bergman (16 years old I believe) spent a year as an 'exchange student' in Nazi Germany in one of the smaller cities. He lived with an ardently Nazi family and says in his autobio that it was heavenly for a teen boy with camp outs, mass marches, firelight parades, uniforms, etc. Later in Sweden he woke up from the dream. Modern people don't realize how APPEALING the Nazis were to so many people.

She had great Cinematographers working for her. Germans were great Cinematographers. F W Murnau who left Germany for Hollywood was a legendary cinematographer who pioneered film techniques and a great filmmaker, but he doesn’t have a star on the walk of fame in Hollywood because he was gay. His film Sunrise was particularly beautiful. Hollywood snubbed his funeral, but Garbo, who never went anywhere, attended.

I think she was very much committed to the art of film making, and had a personality trait that allowed her to ignore any of the unpleasantness of the subjects that interested her. Her devotion to art consumed her life. From her early dancing career, through her acting, directing, and finally her devotion to the African culture she nurtured to the end of her life. The interlude when she was associated with the Nazi Party, I think, was just a means to an end for her.

My high school german teacher, who was herself, Jewish, escorted those interested students to a matinee screening at a Hollywood theater of triumph des willens, in 1959. A memorable, impressive film. Well,i see her as an artist first,and her opportunistic behaviour and fine sense of self preservation tells me
that she was a very intelligent woman. If she wouldve been born in the US instead of germany at that time
im sure she would count today as one of the first great female filmmakers.

Just found this channel. I really enjoyed the doc on this woman. I especially like the narrator and his style. It's a bit like watching an old news reel. I like that "old time" feeling. I've also seen triumph of the will. It is cinematic very advanced for its time. However, if only she could have found a more ethical subject matter for her work. But the time were what they were.

I got to spend an evening at a dinner in Berlin with her when she was 96 years old. I didn’t ask her if she actually was Hitler’s lover … rumor has it she was. She was almost 6 feet tall, slim and beautiful . if you didn’t know her age, you would think she was in her late 50s. That was a very interesting dinner party.

I love this channel, just can't stop watching it 😁 I can bet that You have a pretty long queue for the episodes, but maybe someday You could spare some time and make a documentary about Jozef Pilsudzki? It's hard to find anything longer than 10 minutes here on YT, especially in polish, and that's the one of the most important figures in middle Europe from the WW1 to late 20's - early 30's. Sadly during the communist period of Polish history, He was erased from it by the governing body, and He really deserve His place... :-)

Leni Reifenstahl took up scuba diving in the 1970's, lying about her age to take scuba lessons and get her dive certificate. She became an accomplished underwater photographer, mostly in the Indian Ocean. On her 100th birthday she went scuba diving. I've watched Triumph of the Will and Olympia. Triumph was the most effective propaganda film I've ever watched but for those who think she fully embraced Nazi ideology you should see how much her camera loved Jesse Owens in Olympia.

Dan my father was a Berliner 13 at wars end and never had a father. He brought me up to never follow someone blindly! I’ve visited the 36 Olympics stadium 3 times and the star attraction for me is the wall at the far end which has the winners engraved! Jesse Owens is my favourite Athlete of all time followed by Steffi who I have her autograph on a racket endorsed by her! Leni’s Life was remarkable and I’m grateful for her great artistic documentation of Jesse Owens but yes so many Germans bought into the Nazis and the World suffered for it ! The world progressed technically but the damage that humanity suffered is still going on today but that’s a much larger debate! If someone was to record this event I’m glad it was her as she did a magnificent job but did she denounce her masters post 45 enough I don’t know! Probably not! I would have sent a lot more to the gallows after Nurnburg . People have to pay attention to history a lot more and that’s the biggest concern I have!

Hitler actually respected her as a Filmmaker and artist. He was a fan of hers from her mountain films. And Triumph of the Will is still one of the greatest propaganda films ever made. The film made him look like an invincible Superman. It was very effective. But she never officially joined the Nazi party and she survived their reign just like Speer.

Besides, during all the Nazi years, She never said any political statement or action. She didn't fight during the war. Many women fought , in both sides. Her name is not Reifenstahl.
In german, the combination of the letters "ei" is pronounced like "aye".

Thus, spelling her Reifenstahl would be to pronounce the name as "Rayefenstahl", which is wrong.

The correct spelling is "Riefenstahl", which is pronounced like "Reefenshdål"

At 36:53 the photo of horrified Riefenstahl was likely taken as she watched the summary execution of a group of civilians in Poland. There is a photo showing the aftermath of the execution and some of the same officers are recognisable. She knew and she was there.

The 'Triumph of Will' and 'Olympia' are cinematic masterpieces. Was so enamoured of her that i had sent several letters to her and her cameraman Horst Kettner whom she later married. But no responses. Later I met a German Asst Director at a film festival who told me that she is intensely inward looking and quite suspicious of any one unknown approaching her.

What is not mentioned in this video is that she took diving lessons at the age of 80 while on vacation in Maldives and then cleared he scuba diving tests after lying about her age. The result was a masterpiece in underwater photography- ' Impressions under water'. It is unfortunate that she could not realise her full potential after the war due to the unfair controversies that bogged her, the vilest being raised by the critic Susan Sontag. But lead a fulsome life with the like of Mick Jagger attending her 100th birthday celebrations. RIP Leni.

Leni was an artist who used the systems in which she lived. I don't think she had much of an interest in anything but Leni and Leni's art. She was a brilliant producer/director/cinematographer. She had a great visual eye as can be seen in her Sudan photographs. Her 1936 Olympics film was innovative and artistic. She was an extremely talented visual artist who was like most of us flawed. Unfortunately, her flaws manifested themselves during a terrible era of German history. There is NO doubt she took advantage of the fact she was an admirer of Hitler (and Hitler of her) and was willing to use his influence to get what she wanted.

usually i say u seperate the art from the artist, so songs like great balls of fire, or i believe i can fly, or even johnny be good can be enjoyed seperate from the artist personal sins, in this case i cant give her that excuse when it comes to her nazi films, that was art used to glorify the sin, much like that who i smoke song, there is a difference, i would watch anyfilm she made for entertainment except the nazi propaganda, i watch it for the educational purposes and feel she is just as guilty as the people she filmed, however judgement is up to GOD, i could be wrong, and in that case i hope my FATHER will forgive me, there are so many filmmakers and artist to enjoy, she is one i can do without

Leni Riefenstahl had the soul of an artist. Impressive was how much energy she had to achieve her goal. Probably the propaganda films were just side projects that made money. Forgotten were her other films. But what bothers me were two things: she probably intrigued to get rid of the Jews from the german film industry, and using gypsies from concentration camps as figurants was a no-go.

Remembering that in the mid 30's time magazine featured Hitler as man of the year... We only look in a rear view mirror. Ignoring what might have been... Like all Hollywood types, she played to her audience, wanting approval from those who mattered in her society... It is well said that few in Germany saw the horror to come... what cannot be denied was that she had awesome talent ability and drive, and will be immortal. The character flaws of many truely great people such as the founders of our Republic are overshadowed by their achievements...

It's very evident Riefenstahl's heart was in her art and her ambition. She was not a Nazi ideologue and recoiled at the war and the violence. Her controlling motivations led her to collaborate with the Nazis but she was no murderer at heart unlike the Nazis themselves.

I am from the Philippines. I watched Triumph of the Will and was impressed by its artistic vision and dark glory, if you could call it that.

I cannot condone Riefenstahl's collaboration with the Nazi movement but at the same time I cannot deny she was also a victim of one of the most brutal periods of human history. She was born into her difficult circumstances.

I think it's so tragic that someone possessed with such determination, talent, and (outer) beauty chose to use her gifts for the benefit of such a barbaric regime. She's a puzzle to me as I can clearly see unpleasantness and coldness in her personality, but also a charisma and obvious skill. I find it particularly hard to juxtapose the same woman screaming at soldiers to stop beating gravediggers with the same woman who can exploit concentration camp labour. Thanks for capturing such a complex historical figure. I'll be thinking about this one for awhile.

We did a close study of Leni Riefenstahl in History and they left out all of her antisemitism AND the fact that her early successes had been financed by Jewish people. We were also led to believe that Hitler had been the one to contact her, because she was apolitical. Thank you for making this.
