Complicated
Waikiki Lyrics

Spin that bottle better left unsaid
I'm so blue, still the moodring is red
It's you, it's you
Don’t be scared, you know there's no one home
Hit those lights and let your fingers roam
Green eyes glisten when I'm all alone
If we made it, we can break it
So let’s get complicated
If we made it, we can break it
I could sit and watch you in a daze
Or I could kiss you whilst the record plays
I'm all alone now, what would you say?
It's through, it's through
The lyrics of Waikiki’s song ‘Complicated’ express a somber and reflective monologue about a bittersweet love affair that has ended. The sadness of the singer is evident from the very first lines, as he explains that he can still see the image of his beloved lying underneath his bed, reminding him of happier times. The imagery of ‘spin the bottle’ is a reference to the fleeting and carefree nature of young love, and the singer is reeling under the knowledge that this happiness is now unattainable. Though he claims to be ‘blue’, the mood ring on his hand indicates that he is actually still in love with his lost partner. The repetition of ‘it’s you’ reinforces the idea that the memories of their time together continue to linger in his mind and heart.
The second half of the song sees the singer becoming more hopeful and urging his partner to come to him, even though he is physically alone. He tells her that he will not judge her, and that there is no one else present to disturb their intimacy. The line ‘green eyes glisten when I’m all alone’ suggests that the singer is imagining his partner’s gaze even when she is absent, emphasizing his reliance on the memories of their love. The repetition of ‘with you’ towards the end of this stanza highlights the yearning of the singer for a lost connection.
The final lines of the song carry the weight of the singer’s acceptance of the situation. He acknowledges that the relationship is over, and that he has to move on. However, he still considers what might have happened if they were together, expressing the pain of lost opportunities. The line ‘It’s through, it’s through’ is an acceptance of the finality of their separation and of the passing of time.

"Erector set"? Aren't these guys Australian? It's called Meccano here. Why do they write their lyrics in American English? Also, in the song "Here comes September", the seasonal references match the northern hemisphere, not the southern hemisphere. Are these guys Australian or not?
