Simple Town
Walker Montgomery Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
On a Friday night football game
Sunday after church we all go down to the local cafe
It's like my blue jeans, my dirty old boots
Like my Chevrolet, and my red white and blue
Yeah you know it's the truth
'Cause it's a simple town and that's how we like it
Just an old town square, county fair
And a creek where the boys try to get a little lucky
But it's part of me, and part of you
It'll be a part of our kids too
You can bet when I get back I ain't gonna leave
This simple town
Growin' up all anybody dreamed about was gettin' out
'Til we got out in the real world man we saw what it was all about
Out there it's back stabbin' but I'm back-trackin' back to my hometown
It's where my heart is, I'll fall apart if I don't get back now
'Cause it's a simple town and that's how we like it
Love Jesus and Jones and we ain't gonna stop it
Just an old town square, county fair
And a creek where the boys try to get a little lucky
But it's part of me, and part of you
It'll be a part of our kids too
And you can bet when I get back I ain't gonna leave
This simple town
It's a Small Town, U.S.A., a little work and play
A little everybody knows everybody, and we like it that way
Yeah it's a simple town and that's how we like it
Love Jesus and Jones and we ain't gonna stop it
Just an old town square, county fair
And a creek where the boys try to get a little lucky
But it's part of me, and part of you
It'll be a part of our kids too
And you can bet your sweet ass I ain't gonna leave
Yeah this is right where I'm supposed to be
In this simple town
I love this simple town yeah, yeah, yeah
Walker Montgomery's "Simple Town" is a song that celebrates the virtues of small-town living that are so cherished by the inhabitants. The song is characterized by its upbeat melody and lyrics that capture the essence of a typical American small town. The lyrics describe the events in this small town, from Friday night football games to the local café, from the county fair to the boys trying to get a little lucky, all while emphasizing the importance of community and faith. The singer asserts that he will never leave his hometown since it’s a part of him, a part of everyone that reside there and future generations to come. The song rejects the often held idea that anyone can only be happy and fulfilled by leaving rural or small communities for big cities.
The song, "Simple Town" is full of nostalgia and patriotism, with its references to a red, white, and blue Chevrolet and its emphasis on loving Jesus and Jones (a reference to the country singer George Jones). It tells of the warm and familiar atmosphere that exists in small towns, the sense of belonging, and the way in which everyone knows their neighbor. The song is a celebration of the beautiful simplicity of small-town life, and the importance of the values and traditions that it holds.

Along with Garth, George Strait and Tim McGraw, I listened to John Michael Montgomery, and am a huge fan. Walker has his dads voice but still its his own as well. Great song, takes me back to old school country from the 90’s!
